Waunakee is a town in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1851 and named for General David Waunakee, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first post office was established in Waunakee on November 7, 1851. The present town hall was built in 1907. Waunakee has a rich history that is still being talked about today. In 1851, the area aroundpresent-day Waunakee was part of the Winnebago Nation and there were no schools or churches within the community. On October 2nd of that year, however, General David Waunakee arrived with his brigade from Wisconsin to help suppress a Native American uprising known as "The Battle of Pequot Hills". He ordered Colonel John Fetterman to build a school for the children of settlers living near what is now downtown Waunakee. After general Wunakes arrival many families began moving into what is now downtown Waunakee and started building their homes on land they had bought from the natives or given them free under treaties negotiated between America and Great Britain during this time period In 1854 Reverend Hosea Butterfield organized a Methodist Church which became one of the largest denominations in WI due to its missionary work among Native Americans
