The Coast Guard has been providing assistance to the people of Waunakee, Wisconsin for over 100 years. The first coast guard station in Waunakee was built in 1892. The Coast Guard has continued to provide services in Waunakee through various incarnations and programs. In 1922, the Coast Guard established a shore patrol program in order to help keep the community safe from smugglers and pirates. This service ended in 1954 when the Coast Guard moved its headquarters from Waunakee to Muskego. In 1969, the United States Congress authorized the establishment of a coast guard air traffic control center at Waunakee. This center became known as Air Traffic Service Station #2 (ATS 2) and provided airspace management and air traffic control services for all points within NRG airspace northeast of Milwaukee. ATS 2 closed its doors on May 1, 2002 after serving its purpose for more than 30 years. Today, Air Traffic Service Station #1 continues to provide support for NRG airspace by providing controller positions along with ground facilities at Eau Claire International Airport and Lakeshore Airport near Green Bay

The Waunakee Coast Guard Station was established in 1916. The station served the town of Waunakee and the surrounding area until 1919 when it was moved to its current location on the north side of the river. In 1938, the station relocated to its present location on land that had been donated by Mrs. Anna Tryon. Mrs. Tryon served as director of the station from 1938-1941 and 1945-1948.
The town of Waunakee, Wisconsin is located in the Driftless Area of the United States. The area is made up of rolling hills and valleys that are bisected by the Menominee River. The population was 1,457 at the 2010 census. Waunakee began as a small village in 1855 when settlers from Illinois arrived in what is now Waupaca County. In 1857, the village became part of Racine County and remained so until it was dissolved into Racine and Waupaca counties in 1865. In 1872, a group of farmers from Canada founded the town of Waunakee on land they had purchased near present-day Kewaskum. They named their new community after John A. Macdonald, who had become Prime Minister of Canada during the early years of this country’s history. At first, only men were allowed to live in Waunakee; however, in 1880 women were granted voting rights. The first post office opened in 1876 and continued operation until 1959. It was moved to its current location on Main Street within one decade. Newspapers which operated out of Waunakee include The Prairie Farmer (1877-1981), The Milwaukee Journal (1887-1991), The Chicago Tribune (1901-2002), and Wisconsin State Journal (1902-1969). One notable local figure who lived through these years was Red Grange, an American farmer who helped promote agricultural reform across America during the late 19th century and early 20th century

In 1990, the Coast Guard gifted a fishing net to Miami-Dade County Sheriff's Office in honor of Deputy James Ponce. A year later, they gived an ice skater to Anchorage, AK after it was discovered that the city had not received any gifts from the Coast Guard in previous years. In 1992, the Coast Guard gifted aoculars and binoculars to Great Falls, MT after it was discovered that local law enforcement did not receive any gifts from them during previous years. In 1996, the Coast Guard gave a life jacket and inflatable raft to Corpus Christi TX after noticing that local police department did not receive any gifts from them during previous years.
Waunakee is a town in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what is now Waunakee were French Canadians who arrived in 1778 and called it "Avery". They built the first permanent structure in the area - a log cabin - around 1782. In 1814, Waunakee became part of Green Bay and was incorporated as a village. In 1836, it became a town when its boundaries were widened to include present-day Wauwatosa and Racine counties. Famed baseball player Charlie Gehringer played for Waunakee from 1907 until his retirement in 1951; he had local fame as pitcher for Racine (now Milwaukee) High School from 1914 to 1916 and then for one season with the New York Yankees before coming to Green Bay. A post office was established at Waunakee on July 16, 1838, and remained open until May 3, 1865. The first settler to be killed by Indians was James Ayer (1811-1864). He and three others were pursuing game near Nome when they were attacked by 6 or 7 Sioux on October 12 of that year; all but Ayer were killed or captured while he escaped back to civilization alive unscathed. In 1890 Burnett Hargrave began cattle operations here which led to him being called "the Pioneer Cattleman of Wisconsin." After World War II many people left Green Bay for various reasons including opportunities available far away such as California or Texas where there was no war occurring at that time; however many retain strong connections with their home town including two current mayors – Pete Buttigieg (Dane County) and Rebecca Kleefisch (Milwaukee). Today's economy focuses largely on technology companies such as Apple Inc., Amazon Web Services Inc., Google parent company Alphabet Inc., Facebook Inc., Salesforce CRM although some smaller businesses still remain based in downtownWaunakee
The first European to visit the area was Jean Nicolet in 1634. A year later, the French explorer Samuel de Champlain discovered the region and named it for his patron saint, St. Laurent. The area was part of the Potawatomi tribe until 1806 when they were forced to cede their land to the United States as part of Treaty of Fort Madison. The town of Waunakee was founded in 1836 by John Fitch and others who took over a small Indian village on what is now State Highway 9 South. In 1840, Waunakee became a town charter with a population of about 100 people. By 1851, the town had grown to 450 people and by 1865 it reached 1,000 people. It functioned as an agricultural center until World War II when it became an industrial city with Carrier Corporation being its largest employer from 1941-1945.
