Waunakee, Wisconsin is a small town in the Driftless Area of northern Illinois. It is located on the border of Clark and Wood Counties and is part of the Quad Cities metropolitan area. The population was 5,878 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1848 by French Canadian settlers who named it for Jean-Baptiste Waunakee, Sieur de la Villemarche. The first coffee house in Waunakee was built by John Sapper in 1851 as a small blacksmith shop. He operated it until his death in 1865. His son, Isaac Sapper Jr., continued to run the business until it closed its doors in 1924. The next coffee house to open was called Gopher Coffee House from 1889 to 1893. It served as a general store while also serving as a place where customers could purchase coffee beans and other food items from local farmers. In 1954, Harry Jaffe opened Jaffe's Coffee Shop on Main Street which became one of the most popular Coffee Shops in town with its wide variety of roasts and grinds along with its famous "Jaffe's Special" - an espresso with hot cream and whipped cream that had become very popular during the 1950s through 1960s when additional service stations began opening up all over America offering similar services! In 1970, Harry Jaffe passed away but his sons continued to operate Jaffe's Coffee Shop until their store closed down in 1990 due to fire damage! In 2001, Alfredo’s Italian Café opened on North Main Street which quickly became one of Waunakee’s most popular food establishments providing diners with classic Italian dishes such as pasta dishes, pizza crusts and pastas; antipasti such as sausage or pepperoni; salads; desserts including chocolate cake or ice cream cones; and coffees! Alfredo’s has been running continuously since 1951 providing qualityItalian cuisine at reasonable prices for everyone! Today Alfredo’s continues provide top notch Italian cuisine at competitive prices for everyone including families with children! A few years later another Italian café opened up called Joe’s Pizza Place which provided pizza crustsand pastas plus antipastiand saladsfor dinner nightly while also selling beer and soft drinks! Waunakee is a town in and the county seat of La Crosse County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Racine metropolitan area. Waunakee's name is most likely derived from a Ojibwe word meaning "the place where the water flows out." The first people to live in what is now Waunakee were Sauk Indians. They arrived there in 1836 and built their first village on an island in the Fox River. The Sauk Indians were forced out of their land by white settlers in 1847 and they left behind some of their equipment and tools which are still exhibited at the State Historical Museum in Madison, Wisconsin. In 1854, two brothers named Augustus Crain built a log cabin on what is now Main Street near what is now Walhalla Road. They called it "Crainville". In 1865, Waunakee became a town when it was platted as part of Racine County. The first post office was established in Waunakee on May 1, 1868. By 1870, there were 9 residents living in Waunakee according to the US Census Bureau report*. On November 3, 1888*, arsonist Johnnie Lee set fire to a barn near present day Park Avenue and Burnham Road* during a dispute between local farmers andLee* over ownership of disputed acres adjacent to the community.* This event has been referred to as "The Night Of The Living Dead" because several hundred people including many children died as a result of this act.* Ira Bledsoe played an integral role in helping contribute to modern-day Waunakee with his business acumen *. He opened up Ira's Department Store at Main & South streets back when such businesses existed within rural areas before Walmart took over these functions *. After World War II ended*, he operated various small businesses until his death at 85 years old * . There have been other individuals who have contributed significantly to current day Waunakee through their work or entrepreneurship however due recognition will not be given for those individuals until future studies are conducted
