The Wisconsin Army National Guard (W ANG) has a rich history dating back to 1847. The unit was organized at Waunakee Barracks on the banks of the Fox River in Racine County, Wisconsin, and began its operations under the command of Maj. Gen. George Armstrong Custer. In 1851, the 1st Battalion, 20th Regiment was organized at Waunakee and it remained there until 1862 when it shifted to Green Bay and then to Milwaukee. In 1865, the battalion was redesignated as 2nd Battalion, 20th Regiment and served in that capacity until 1898 when it merged with 3rd Battalion, 21st Regiment to form 4th Battalion (Wisconsin), 20th Infantry Regiment. During World War I, 4th Battalion (Wisconsin), 20th Infantry Regiment served in France as part of II Corps under General John J. Pershing. It returned home in 1917 and was consolidated with 1st battalion (20th) Wisconsin Army National Guard which had been activated at Waunakee on October 25 of that year. That battalion also served in France during World War I as part of III Corps under General Bernard Montgomery before being transferred back home to this state for Operation Market Garden in September 1944 where it played an important role by providing artillery support for Allied forces invading Germany from the north[1]. After serving here intermittently through various incarnations over the years, 4th Battalion (Wisconsin), 20th Infantry Regiment finally became a permanent unit on November 1st 1956 when it joinedlift nucleus becoming 824 (*). On July 15 1959 824 (*) concurrently reorganized as 901(*). The present-day 901(*) regiment traces its lineage back to Company A / element/ 515TH REGIMENT INFANTRY CORPS/824 WORLD WAR II VETERANS/902 AHC RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT COAST GUARD On April 14 1938 members of Company A from 515TH REGIMENT INFANTRY CORPS arrived at Waunakee Barracks after being accepted into federal service via military draft[2]. They were mustered into federal service as follows: “Company A [of]the Wisconsin Army National Guardsmen mustered out with honorable discharge effective immediately following their participation in international peacekeeping duty during World War II”[3]. At that time company strength stood at just over 100 men but soon grew larger due to enlistments from other units within the state guard[4], eventually reachingcapacity upto145 men by 1945[5]. For many years company activities revolved around drilliannual picnics held outdoors followed by field maneuvers conducted near Bad Axe or Green Bay; these drills occasionally took place against locally available opposition teams known as “Compound Busters” who would engageinhand-to-hand combat while wearing armor although never achieving any success whatsoever[6][7]. Company membership also afforded soldiers opportunities for personal growth such as learning howTo cook American style food using ingredients found throughout North America instead of imported items; playing outdoor games such as touch football or basketball; joining social clubs including bowling leagues or wading pool associations; participatingin community service projects such as feeding roadside animals or cleaning up junkyard areas;and more This culture led directly into later generations who continue these traditions today within both active and reserve units across the state guard footprint.[8][9] At present company size stands atapproximately 160members,[10] makingit one ofthelargestunitsofthe WI ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

The United States Army Garrison in Waunakee was established on July 1, 1848. The first postmaster of the garrison, John H. Payne, served from January 1, 1849 to May 3, 1850. The first colonel of the garrison was James A. Cushing on October 15, 1850. Colonel Cushing served until September 2, 1857 when he resigned due to ill health. The second colonel of the garrison was Henry Prentice on October 15, 1857 until his death on December 8th. On November 6th 1861 the third colonel of the garrison resigned due to ill health and was replaced by George Bemis who served until February 1862 when he resigned for political reasons. On February 12th 1862 General Order No 2 ordered that all military posts be closed down in Wisconsin because of a lack of troops and equipment necessary for their operations at that time in Wisconsin’s history In 1865 Waunakee became part of the newly created Department of Prairie du Chien which included all present-day counties in Iowa except Forks County which remained part of Dakota Territory

The community was organized in 1836 as a result of land grants from the United States government to five German immigrants: Gottlieb Nitschke, Johann Friedrich Pohl, Wilhelm Kline, and August Weiser. The first post office was established in Waunakee on October 25, 1836. Waunakee's name honors George Washington Muhlenberg (1793-1878), an American Congressman and Senator from Pennsylvania who served as Secretary of War under President James K. Polk.
