Waukesha was first settled in 1846 by the Wiscona tribe of Indians. The town was named for General John W. Hennepin, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as Wisconsin’s second governor. The town’s founding fathers believed thatWisconsin would become a great American state if it were divided into eastern and western parts. In 1871, Waukesha became the county seat of Milwaukee County and was renamed after General John Jacob Astor, an American fur trader and philanthropist who had donated land to the county. The city of Milwaukee was founded in 1836 by Colonel James Kapp and his men when they discovered a rich natural gas field near what is now known as Wauwatosa. Kapp quickly build a refinery on the site, which became one of the most important industrial plants inWI. By 1920, Kapp’s refinery had produced more than two million barrels of oil per day. After World War II, however, industry switched from oil to gas due to advances in technology. The refinery closed in 1967 and its products were trucked away to other facilities around the world until it finally ceased operations in 1980. Today, Waukesha is home to several major businesses including KohlbergKravis Roberts & Co., J&J Lumber Company (formerly known as Bethlehem Steel), Chobani Yogurt Inc., Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewing Company, Appleton Cheese Factory, First National Bank of WI (later called Bancorp), and Sturtevant Paper Products company
