Watertown, Wisconsin is a town in the western part of the U.S. state of Wisconsin and is a suburb of Milwaukee. The population was 20,898 as of the 2010 census. It is the largest town in Racine County and one of three towns in Racine County that are both included in the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The other two towns are Kenosha and Waukesha. Watertown's history can be traced back to 1847 when a group of young men from nearby Prospect Park purchased 2,000 acres (800 hectares) along current-day avenues 340th and 36th Streets for $5 per acre (1,200 total). They named their new community "Watertown" after they had been introduced to coffee by a man who owned land near where Watkins Chapel now stands. The first store opened in 1847 at what is now 3rd Street/Avenue 340th Avenue; it was called The Coffee House and served coffee until 1860 when it became known as The State Hotel. In 1872, John Husted founded an oil refinery on present-day Broadway which grew into one of Wisconsin's leading petroleum refineries. Husted also donated land for the Watertown Cemetery which was dedicated on October 1st, 1881 by then-Mayor George Selden (1851-1925). In 1892, Judge Augustus Shepley bought 614 acres (250 hectares) east of present day downtown Watertown for $2 per acre ($4 total). He renamed his property "Shepley Farm", constructed numerous homes there over many years including one designed by architect Alfred Bierstadt based on Assumption College's quadrangle—the first college-built house to be erected in America outside New York City proper. For many years shepherding his sheep pastures through snowstorms during wintertime he remained alone at this farm with no telephone or electricity until 1936 when he built himself a weatherproof home using materials brought over by truck from Milwaukee during its severe freezeage! During World War II he served as Operator Number One with Radio Corporation Of America at Green Bay while helping develop early radar technology; later he sold his Patent rights to IBM for $10 million which made him one of the richest people in America at the time! In 1984, due to increasing water shortages resultant from urban growth throughout North America since Des Moines had such an expansive agricultural area following Lake Superior withdrawal), Shepley donated all remaining topsoil on his property back to municipalities within 100 miles (160 kilometers) of Chicago so that local farmers could use it without sacrificing quality soil for human habitation! Today much like Prospect Park before it – Watertown has seen its share of change both good and bad with some areas seeing revitalization while others have seen decline or abandonment - but despite these challenges its citizens remain committed to keeping their community vibrant and active through things such as art shows, social events & more!

Watertown is a town in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 24,313 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Milwaukee County. Watertown became a town on April 12, 1837 and it was named after the Potawatomi word watertown means "place where men gather." The first European to visit the area now known as Watertown was Gabriel de La Salle who landed on September 10, 1679 while exploring what is now Milwaukee County. He named it Monserrate (now Manitowoc),Wisconsin after his native France. French traders and fur traders also visited the area in this period and began trading with Native Americans such as the Potawatomi and Menominee. In 1835, Anthony Wayne founded what would become Appleton and developed it into an agricultural center because of its location between two important rivers - the Chicago River to the south and Lake Michigan to the north. In 1836, John Fitch established one of America's first dry goods stores in Watertown which became a major player in local trade helped by its location on busy street corner near where today's First National Bank stands. In 1840, Nathan Hale served time for treason for conspiring to overthrow Ulysses S Grant during the American Civil War based largely on evidence he received from Watertown trader Edward Robinson who had been providing information about Grant's movements to General James Kappelbeck of Vincennes Indiana). Watertown experienced heavy development due to its strategic location along main roadways connecting other municipalities in central Wisconsin with Chicago via railroads. A number of businesses were built including: First National Bank (1840-1971), Aurora Iron Works (1841-2008), Waukesha Light & Power Company (1846-1922), Moline Cheese Factory (1848-1974) and American Store Corporation (1920-2006). Because of this growth many homes were built throughout downtown; however much of these development occurred outside of current day Watertown limits that borderedonetime farms or contained little infrastructure such as schools or hospitals beyond those found in adjacent villages like Appleton or Waukesha
Watertown is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the north shore of Lake Michigan and east of Milwaukee. The population was 28,711 at the 2010 census. Watertown is one of five towns in Milwaukee County and one of the nine town sites in Racine County. The first permanent settler in what is now Watertown was Jonas Salk, who developed a vaccine for smallpox there in 1928. Other early settlers included John Addison and his wife Margaret (née Geddes), Abram Gottlieb and his family, Philip Seligman and his brother Nathan, Cornelius Vanderbilt's son Augustus Davenport, George Hennepin lineal descendant Isaac Hennepin, David Nicollet and Reva House. In 1837-38 Alexander Cresson came west to purchase land from John Chilton near present day North Avenue and Prairie Road. A mill has been found on this site since 1840 which may have been built by Cresson as part of his land purchases. In 1847 Alfred Nobel founded Nobel Industries with some assets he had acquired from his father's business empire; these were used to create many industries including automotive manufacturing, explosives production, fishing gear manufacture etc., starting with dynamite production at Kolsch & Noble Explosives Company on Park Row near today's Noma restaurant before moving into other ventures such as shipping lines (Nobel Line) and banking (Norman Rockwell Bank). Nobel also donated several acres (or hectares) of land to Watertown for municipal use as well as setting up machinery that would be used to process coal mined hereabouts into munitions during World War II; this constituted what is now known as Nobels Land Mill Site #3A1D2E2F3G4H5J6K7L8M9R10P11Q12R13Sc1T1U2V3W1X because it contains evidence that coal was processed here into munitions during World War II - see map below! Today much of what once made up Watertown - its churches (All Saints Anglican Church being the oldest), schools (including Northwestern High School), businesses etc.- remain standing although some are no longer operational due to various factors such as demolition or conversion into housing units over time. The only significant building that has burned down over the years is the Methodist Episcopal Zion Church which stood adjacent to where Ziegfeld Theatre stands today just south of present day First Street NW between State Street NE and Superior Avenue NW across Lake Michigan from downtown Milwaukee; arsonist(s) set fire to it in 1916 shortly after its construction began! Watertown got its name from an incident reported by local pioneer Elijah Whitehead on July 30th 1792 when he observed "wet mills" operated by Potawatomi Indians along Menomonee River just north of present day Main Street; they were using water pulled out from nearby wells for their washing/drying processes!
