The Coast Guard has been in the Verona area since 1891. The present Coast Guard Station was built in 1925 and is located on the shore of Sturgeon Lake. It became a station for the Wisconsin State Patrol in 1956 and then the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources in 1974. The Coast Guard Station served as the main building for Headquarters, District 5 until it closed its doors in 2001. Today, the station offers visitor facilities including a restaurant, store, and gift shop. There is also a viewing platform overlooking Sturgeon Lake where people can see ships passing by or take photos of the scenery. In addition to providing an interesting vantage point for visitors, the station also serves as a research center for science students at neighboring schools. The history of Coast Guard gifts to Verona goes back to 1891 when Captain James Ahern purchased land on which he erected a small lighthouse with funds he had saved from his previous job as a surveyor. He named his new lighthouse "Verona" after his home town of Verona, Italy where he had lived during World War I injury sustained while serving with France’s army corps des forces étrangères under General Pershing. Captain Ahern's original lighthouse was destroyed by fire but was rebuilt within three months using materials salvaged from other local lighthouses destroyed during that war including one nearpresent day Sturgeon Lake called "Foster". The secondveronica lighthouse (now known as Bicentennial Tower) became operational on October 1st 1892 and served faithfully until it burned down on May 26th 1893 due to careless storage practices by its operators! Ahern's third lighthouse was not completed until 1895 however it did serve briefly replacement duties for Foster before being disbanded on July 16th 1896 due to budget cuts! The fourth veronica lighthouse (now known as Post Office Tower) only served briefly between 1902-1903 before again being decommissioned because of lack of appropriations! Finally, Captain John Witherspoon donated his unused land adjacent to post office tower site so that an auxiliary coast guard station could be built using funds provided through state senator Edwin Leland Hardin's sponsorship campaign!! It wasn't until 1926 when Superintendent Harry Kapp assigned Ltadier George Troup to operate the new coast guard station based out of post office tower!. In 1932 Kapp transferred responsibility from Ltadier Troup to First Lieutenant Floyd Cushing who would serve concurrently thruout this period!!! lieutenant colonel charles baird took over operations at unit headquarters Monmouth Junction NJ beginning Mar 1936 effective Jul 1937.. During 1938-1939 alterations were made adding extensive barracks/quarters necessitated by increased personnel requirements!! On Nov 2nd 1939 squadron HQ moved from Monmouth Junction NJ allthe wayto Milwaukee WI , commando training school opened there Feb 1940 !! Apr 1941 squads began arriving here Jan 1942,,,,,,station renamed Waukesha Coastguard Station Apr 1945,,,,,,station closed Oct 1946 following involvement with WW II !! The Coast Guard Gift History in Verona, Wisconsin began on December 1, 1915 when the first coast guard cutter, USCGC Polar Star was donated to the town by Mayor John L. Pohl. The Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star served as a patrol boat and manned by local volunteers until it was decommissioned in 1951. On September 3, 1957, another coast guard cutter, CG Point Pleasant was gifted to the town by Mayor Bob Hanson. CG Point Pleasant served as a schoolboat and manned by locals until it was decommissioned in 1984. On November 12, 1990, the Town of Verona Purchased the USCGC Shenandoah which had been donated to the town by Captain Ron Davenport. Shenandoah served as a search and rescue vessel and also manned by locals until it was decommissioned on October 31, 1995.
