Verona is a small town in the far northwest corner of Wisconsin, about seventy-five miles from Milwaukee. The population was 6,532 at the 2010 census. The community started as a farming village in 1855 and became a borough in 1902. It was incorporated as a city in 1968. Verona is located on the eastern border of the counties of Dane and Winnebago. The first Europeans to visit what is now Verona were French traders who passed through in 1671. A post office called "Vernon" was established at Vernon Lake on December 11, 1855, by order of Governor John C. Hennepin. The name "Verona" was chosen for its resemblance to Verna, an Italian girl who had been kidnapped by Canadian fur traders and then raised by them near Montreal. In 1862, Verona voted to become part of Racine County but it reverted back to Racine County after six years because of lack of political support within that county's boundaries. In 1902, Verona became part of Kenosha County when that county was created from parts of Milwaukee and Racine Counties respectively. Kenosha County extended eastward beyond its original boundaries until it merged with Milwaukee County on July 1, 1907 to form one large county with a total population of over 50 million people—one third more than Chicago metropolitan area! As part of this merger process various villages within Kenosha County were absorbed into larger municipalities within Milwaukee or Racine Counties: Vernon (1856), Arlington (1861), Appleton (1865), Muskegon Heights (1868), Allumette (1870). Not all these villages had incorporated into cities; some continued as rural towns with a single schoolhouse and few residents until they were annexed into larger municipalities during this period known as “the Great Merger” which transformed many small communities into large metropolises across North America! Most notably though Arlington became the largest municipality ever formed in Wisconsin when it annexed most portions of Green Bay including Menomonee Falls before becoming the second largest city in Wisconsin behind Madison! This consolidation process accelerated during World War II as businesses adopted wartime production strategies which required denser populations close together for 1939–1945 military production goals; resulting in even more incorporation into larger municipalities throughout the state! After World War II most local governments went through another stage known as “the Discontinuity” where smaller municipalities amalgamated with other surrounding municipalities without any major changes occurring; however Vernon did not experience this type of fate and remain an independent municipality unto today!
Verona was founded in 1868 by John and Anna Vandiver. The town was named for the Verona dairy farm which had been donated to the community by their father. The Vandiver family operated a grocery store and bakery in the town until they sold their business in 1924. In that year, Verona became a city.
