Sussex, Wisconsin is a small town in the heart of the Great Lakes State. The population was 706 at the 2010 census, making it one of the smallest towns in Wisconsin. Sussex has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two thousand years and was first settled by European settlers in 1836. The town was named after Sussex County, England. The first store in Sussex opened on Main Street in 1837. The first post office was established in 1841. In 1865, a school began operations in Sussex. In 1889, a county courthouse and jail were built near the present-day library and community center. The population of Sussex increased to 1,044 by 1910. The manufacture of cheese began here around 1840 and continued until about 1870 when it merged with other local industries to become what is now UW-Milwaukee's dairy sector. Cheese production continued until about 1950 when it largely became an importation industry with foreign countries taking over most of the production capacity within Wisconsin limits due to rising consumer demand for domestic cheese products from other states. Today, Sussex features several notable businesses including: One World Trade Center (the world’s largest indoor mall), D’Angelo’s Italian restaurant – home to one of only three such restaurants left open in America - as well as retail stores like Walgreens and Sears; numerous high-end apartments; multiple golf courses; a daycare/preschool; a Baptist church located just outside town limits; and several residences used as weekend getaways or vacation rentals by visitors to neighboring towns like Kenosha or Oshkosh
The town of Sussex was founded in 1837 by George Washington and his family. The town grew quickly, and by 1851 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1865, the town became the county seat of Sussex County. The county government was moved to Racine in 1893, and the town lost its status as the county seat. In 1931, the towns of New Berlin and Oak Creek merged into Sussex.
