Sussex, Wisconsin is a town in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Sussex is located on the east side of the Black River and is bordered by Douglas to the north, Oconomowoc to the west and south, and Manitowoc to the east. The first settlers in what would become Sussex were Captain James Dimmick and his family who arrived in 1836. They founded a gristmill on the riverbank which still stands today. Today Sussex is a bedroom community for Stevens Point with over 25 businesses located there. In 1852 when US Highway 12 was created it ran through what is now Sussex and then crossed over into Douglas County. In that year it was decided to name the town after Admiral David Dixon Porter who had been killed during World War I while leading an American Expeditionary Force against Meiji Japan. Commodore John Wills chose that name for his community because he believed that it represented all things American including military prowess and strength. The first school in Sussex opened its doors in October of 1854 as part of a government-sponsored educational program entitled "A Century of Progress." It was built on land donated by Reverend Cuyler Hinebaugh along with other donations from farmers across the county. The first teacher, Mrs Harris taught school until 1861 when she became Superintendent of Schools in neighboring Oconomowoc where she stayed until her death in 1896 One of the earliest businesses established in Sussex was one belonging to Elisha Sibley which operated a store corner near present day Clinton Street and High Street. Sibley also supplied goods needed by early settlers such as flour, bacon, hams, cheese etc.. He also served as justice of peace from 1857-1859 After several years of operation Sibley sold his business to Ebenezer Cook who continued operations until 1886 when he moved away following religious conversion to Methodism Cook's store remain open until this day providing local residents with groceries and general merchandise since 1978 . Another early business owner was Elijah Potter who operated an ice cream parlor at 5th Street and Appleton Road from 1865-1868 . A post office called Potterville was established at this location in 1868 but failed due to lack of mail service . In 1870 Potter opened up his own grocery store at 6th Street and Appleton Road which soon became well known throughout southeastern Wisconsin for its fresh produce , meat products , baked goods etc .. After many unsuccessful attempts Potter finally succeeded with opening his Noble grocery store at 8th Street & Academy Avenue which lasted until 1948 before being replaced by another establishment called Noble Drug Store
