Sussex is a town in the state of Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,959 at the 2010 census. Sussex was founded on June 15, 1857, by Colonel John S. Hastings and his wife Clara. The first post office in Sussex was established on July 1, 1857. It served as the village of Big Oaks until 1871 when it became a town. On December 12, 1870, Sussex had its first election for township trustees and it gained city status on January 1st of 1871. The first settler in Sussex was Captain Lewis Hinton who came to the area in 1847 from Virginia with his family and homesteaded land near present-day Hayward Lake on what is now State Highway 10th Street and County Road M-1 (now US 8th Street). He named his property Hastings after Colonel John S. Hastings who helped him purchase the land from the federal government for $2 per acre ($10 per square mile). In 1865, Captain Hinton married Jane Aiken and they moved to their new home which they built on lands purchased from Wabash River Navigation Company President James Krieger east of present day Hayward Lake Boulevard and west of White Sands Trail (now SR 801). They raised chickens, hogs and cows and hunted game including deer, bear and moose over their many years here before moving back into civilization in 1907 when they opened a store called The Gables along present day Academy Avenue in what is now known as Olde Sussex Village. Captain Hinton's daughter Nellie founded her own clothing store called The Belleeper across fromtoday's Main Street south of where First National Bank once stood before being demolished between 1924 - 1928 during construction of I-94 near downtown Milwaukee. At one time there were three such stores located throughout rural southeastern Wisconsin operated by women: One each in Apple Valley (1924), Green Bay (1925), Superior (1926) just south of Waukesha Rapids off Highway 42 northeast of Superior; one each in La Crosse (1920), Menominee Falls (1920), Racine (1920), Kenosha (1921) just northwest of Milwaukee; one each at Sparta(1922) & Tomahawk Point(1924). Mrs. Lillie Buhl operated another clothing store also locations included Spooner Heights Shopping Center next door to Tomahawk Point Powerhouse Museum & Park opposite Racine County Courthouse within limits set by supervisors late 1940’s thru early 1950’s adjacent to Prairie du Chien High School; New Brighton Shopping Center adjoining Racine County Courthouse 1945 - 1949 adjacent to then occupied Bypass Allis Chalmers Manufacturing Co Inc building prior to that site becoming East Side Place mall circa 1960s concurrent with Interstate 94 through that area

In the early 1800s, the area around present-day Sussex was home to a small Native American village. The first white settlers arrived in 1836 when John Denton and his family set up a farm on the south side of the Fox River.
