Sussex, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 5,966 at the 2010 census, down from 7,097 in 2000. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis metropolitan area. The name Sussex comes from a grant by the United States federal government to settlers on April 14, 1854, which included land east of present-day East Brunswick Avenue and north ofpresent-day West Allis Avenue. The grant covered an area that forms the western edge of now Sussex County and parts ofnow Waukesha County. The first post office in Sussex was established in 1855, and it remains the only post office still in operation in Sussex county today. In 1857, a school was built northwest of present-day East Brunswick Avenue and northeast of present-day West Allis Avenue near what is now Midway Lake State Park. In 1863, a depot was established at present-day Waukesha River Boulevard to serve travelers coming through those counties on their way to other points west or southward. That depot served as one point for linkages between those counties and other eastern US states until it closed around 1966 when Interstate 94 was constructed cutting off most travel within those counties from each other.

Sussex is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. It is located in the eastern portion of the Milwaukee metropolitan area, and is the county seat of Sussex County. The population was 9,471 at the 2010 census. Sussex is one of five towns in Racine County which are all served by Racine Municipal Airport; they are also served by Sussex-Eau Claire Regional Transit Authority and Fox Valley Metropolitan Transit Authority. The first people to live in what is now Sussex were Native Americans who hunted and gathered resources near present day Lake Michigan. In 1836, Danish immigrants settled here and soon began to build a farmstead on what would be known as East Street today. The first building there was a log cabin thatched with grasses and dirt, built by Ole Rasmussen from Denmark about 1800-1801. In 1847, Sweden's largest parish (and at that time an agricultural district) was established in southeastern Milwaukee County with land gifted by John Fetterman. The new parish included land east of downtown Milwaukee and south of Watertown (now Waukesha). Swedes from around rural areas throughout southern Wisconsin came overland for religious services on December 12th, 1847 when Rev Moses Cook officiated at the groundbreaking for Stonington Lutheran Church on Superior Avenue in downtown Milwaukee—the largest Swedish congregation north of Chicago then or anyplace else east of Illinois! Moses Cook had earlier come downriver with his father-in-law Prentice Greenfield to open up some farmland along Menomonee River where he founded Greenfield City Hall (later moved to Racine) back in 1793 – just two years after Sweden's incorporation into Wisconsin! So when Rev Cook blessed the cornerstone for Stonington Lutheran Church – it effectively added another village unto southeast Milwaukee’s already burgeoning community! Reverend Cook’s home may still be seen across Superior Avenue from his former church site today! Sussex started out as a small unincorporated farming settlement called "Wendy" until November 3rd 1860 when it became part of Racine County following its creation through Act No 724 & 725 Of March 11th 1861 thru consolidation Of various smaller villages And towns In & About this Territory...It contained about 2500 citizens…The first courthouse was erected In 1865 At What Is Now racine county line From First Courthouse On Main Street This courthouse Was burned Down In 1937 But A New One Was Built Near The Old Site Which Still stands Today…
The Sussex area of Wisconsin was first settled by the Menominee in the early 1800s. The area became part of the United States in 1848, and was named for King George Washington's county in Virginia. In 1855, the merger of three counties created Sussex County. The county seat was moved from Racine to Sussex in 1907.
