Butterfield in 1836 as a stopping point on the road from Milwaukee to Prairie du Chien. Butterfield and his troops were then moved to what is now Waukesha County in 1846, and the first post office was established there in 1852. In 1862, the village of Sussex was platted, and the first school opened there in 1865. The town continued to grow until it reached its current size in 1953 when it annexed part of neighboring Racine. There has been a military presence here continuously since then- various units have been stationed here from World War II through Afghanistan and Iraq. The town’s largest employer has always been the U.S. Army Ammunition Plant which has produced ammunition for both American and NATO forces since 1906. The town’s rich military history can be seen not only via artifacts but also through stories shared by residents themselves about their experiences with soldiers or their relationships with them- many of which date back more than fifty years! One such story is about Private First Class Donald Lunsford who served with Company C of the 5th Infantry Regiment during World War II. As an infantryman, PFC Lunsford participated in several key battles including Ia Dragaon Ridge and Arnhem itself- both of which he refers to as “the most difficult fighting I ever did see” because they were so close to home! He later served as an armored ambulance driver for two tours throughout Korea before being discharged in 1957 due to health concerns associated with shellshock victims! One particular event that resonates deeply with locals is the Battle of Kasserine Pass where Ulysses S Grant’s army faced off against Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee; PFC Lunsford helped lead Company B of the 1st Battalion Dakota National Guard into action alongside other local volunteers! Afterward, he returned home sick but took part in countless community events until his death at age ninety three years old; an incredible accomplishment given his exposure to combat!

Sussex is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the Fox River near Appleton. The population was 1,977 at the 2010 census. Sussex is part of Green Bay metropolitan area. The name "Sussex" originated from an early settler's claim that he had found beans and other booty in the area now known as Sussex County. In 1836, a post office was established in what is now Sussex and it continued to be used until 1959. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Sussex County were farmers who arrived between 1836 and 1840. They built log cabins and small frame houses on furrows they had dug into the ground for agriculture purposes. By 1850, many of these farmers had moved away, but their descendants still live in Sussex today. In 1853, a group of men associated with the Underground Railroad took refuge near what is now town limits when they were arrested by sheriff's deputies for trying to escape slavery in Illinois. They hid for several days before being able to make their way back to northern Wisconsin and reaching safety by nightfall. This event is also generally considered to have started the development of Sussex as a town. As more people moved into present-day Sussex from various parts of Wisconsin during the late 19th century, there was a need for more than one store per household due to lack of space inside larger stores or on streets near them. A wagonwheel inn/livery stable was built about 1880 on land west of present-day town hall; this business served as an essential hub for transportation within and around township boundaries until 1953 when Route 7 replaced it as Main Street throughmost townships

Sussex County, Wisconsin is located in the northern part of the United States. The county was organized on November 3, 1836 and named for Sussex, England. It covers an area of about 142 square miles and has a population of about 25,000 residents as of 2015. The county seat is Sussex. The first settler in Sussex County was James Fenton who arrived in 1838. Other early settlers included Isaac Brown and John Dye. In 1856, Wm Henson bought land east of present day Sussex for $3 per acre. He built the first post office in the county which was called “Henson’s Corners” after him. A store and school were also built soon afterward at this location. In 1868-69, Jno Cushing laid out a road from Green Bay to Lisbon which became known as County Road #1 or CR 1A today. This route served as a main artery between Green Bay and Milwaukee until it was replaced by Interstate 84 in 1980. In those days, there were only two entrances into town: one on State Street (now US 6) and one on Washington Avenue (now US 54). Now both entrances are closed off by heavy traffic flow while they are under construction - an interesting remnant from when this area was pioneer country! On February 14, 1840, John Prentice set up his mill on Otter Creek west of present day Sussex where he had been living since he came to America with his family four years earlier from Great Britain aboard the ship “Sevastopol” with sixteen others passengers including his wife Sarah Beardmore Prentice alias “Dorcas” (born December 12th 1799). Mr. Prentice had emigrated to America expecting to find a better life but found instead what he now calls “the most savage country that ever filled up a human being's heart” so harsh that even nature couldn't heal it! The hardships experienced during those early days must have been truly galling for Mr. Prentice's wife who bore him nine children over fourteen years before she finally died at age eighty-six in 1916; three sons still live in Sussex County today!
