In 1848, the Wisconsin Territory was created from parts of Michigan and Iowa. On September 15, 1848, the first acts of the Territorial Legislature were passed in order to create the township of Sussex. The first settler in Sussex was John Cavanaugh. In 1850, Charles Bendix purchased a farm on what is now West Side Road in Sussex. By 1861, three other families had moved into Sussex from Illinois and Minnesota: Jno. Pugh, Abraham parish and his family; Richt Denny and his family; George Houser with his family. In 1863, Leland Stanford erected a general store at what is now State Street in Sussex. The town continued to grow as various businesses were established including a blacksmith shop and a ferry service to connect it with neighboring townships. Other notable businesses include an opera house which opened in 1875 and closed in 1902, an ice cream parlor which opened in 1907 and closed in 1951, a library which opened in 1927 and remains open today (the library currently has around 85% occupancy), a Methodist church built 1915-16 that still stands as one of the oldest buildings in town (currently used as office space), two golf courses (one located on Old Main Road close to where the original post office once stood) as well as several houses used for government meetings or private parties during town's early days.
