Superior, Wisconsin is a town in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 3,845 at the 2010 census. Superior's name comes from a post office that was established there in 1854. The community was originally called Chilton and then Huttonville. The first settler to arrive in what is now Superior was A.M. Merrill in 1855. He named his new settlement after General Winfield Scott and his army who had come through the area during the Mexican-American War on their way east to attack Chicago. Merrill had seen Scott's retreating army from a hilltop lookout near modern day Milwaukee when he drove his cart overland to his farmstead on December 5 of that year. A log cabin was built by Captain John Fitch near what is now downtown Superior in 1857 or 1858 as part of an effort by him and others to secure government land grants for settlers along the Fox River valley north of Milwaukee. In 1865, Captain Fitch donated land to the town for its courthouse square and brick schoolhouse which are still standing today). In 1870–71, construction began on a sawmill located just north of present day downtown Superior on the site of what is now Brown’s Hardware store (now known as Sears). The first school in town was opened in 1870; it became known as “The Mount’s School” and served students until 1915 when it closed due to financial problems. A new school was built in 1915; this structure still stands today and serves children today as Superior Middle School. In 1907, the Fox River Bridge was built across the river from town to provide access to products brought into town by farmers from outlying areas of the state for processing along with goods coming downriver from Chicago (then an important city). This bridge remains one of Superior's most unique landmarks today and is also home to The Shrine Museum which offers exhibits on local history and artifacts from throughout the area
The first Superior post office was established on May 5, 1854. The present post office building was built in 1924.
