Airforce gift history in Superior, Wisconsin began with the donation of a hangar by the federal government to the city in 1944. The city then gave permission for the military to use it as an air force station. In 1951, the city donated another hangar and a runway to the army. The army used it for training and operations until 1978. Then, the air force moved into the new facility. In 1984, the federal government given back its donation of a hangar and runway to Superior City Council. Mayor John Meyers dedicated them as part of Mayor Meyers' plea for money from Congress for defense spending during his campaign for office in 1984. The airport was renamed Air Force Base Superior after this event. Superior, Wisconsin is a town in and the county seat of Portage County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 6,857 at the 2010 census. Located on the Fox River near Appleton and Wausau, Superior is known for its strong agricultural economy and its location within a Great Lakes region. Superior also has a large manufacturing sector that includes aluminum products, boatbuilding, paper products and tire production. The first European to visit Superior was François de La Salle in 1679. He named the site "Vincennes" after his mentor at Jesuit College in France, Father Louis Vincennes. In 1792 Napoleon Bonaparte awarded land grants to three prominent families: the Deuel family received what is now Portage County; John Marshall received Racine County; while Nicholas-Jacques Rousseau got Marquette County including Superior. Because of this history and because it was located on the Fox River between Chicago (in Illinois) and Milwaukee (in Wisconsin), Superior quickly became an important port city on Lake Michigan's Upper Peninsula. In 1839–40 Chauncy Welles built a flourmill on the river's north side which soon became one of America's largest flourmills with an output of 150 sacks per day. Other early businesses included grist mills, cheese plants and wagon lines from Appleton downriver to Duluth through Superior (and back). The lumber industry arrived during Prohibition but declined as mills closed across North America due to competition from cheaper foreign sources. During World War II production stopped altogether but some materials such as aluminum were used in aircraft manufacturing in nearby Meissen Township until those operations closed too as well when American reliance shifted to Japanese production postwar. Afterward many farmers left their rural roots for urban centers such as Appleton or Wausau where they began producing food crops such as corn ethanol or wheat semolina instead of lumber or other heavy industrial outputs like aluminum or steel etcetera which had become more expensive due to new technology developments since World War II like plastics made from natural resources rather than synthetic materials made using chemicals etcetera not just around towns/cities but all over North America where these industries had begun developing relatively recently starting with rubber manufacture throughout much of nineteenth century Thanks largely to advances in engineering even technologies developed during World War I could be turned into valuable exports by changing hands among different countries multiple times thus creating markets outside their original borders thanks again technological developments during WWI
