Sun Prairie is a town in Marathon County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,624 at the 2010 census. Sun Prairie is part of the Green Bay–West Allis–La Crosse metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Sun Prairie was a French trader named Pierre Marquette in 1673. He and his party explored the area which would become Marathon County. In 1836, US President Andrew Johnson established Grant College here as the first coeducational college in America. In 1890, local farmers founded the Sun Prairie Agricultural Society to promote agriculture and improve irrigation systems in rural areas of Wisconsin. They also donated land for a Roman Catholic church and cemetery on their farmsteads adjacent to today's town center. In 1898, Sun Prairie voters passed a $10 per capita tax for education purposes which helped fund public schools that remain present-day: Grant High School (now known as White Cloud High School), Northshore Junior/Senior High School (now known as South Shore Middle School), and Northwest Community College (now known as University of Wisconsin-River Falls). On July 4th, 1907, Sun Prairie residents voted by referendum to annex into Racine Township due to its increased population density; this annexation took place on December 10th of that year. The town's name comes from two things: "Sune" meaning sunbeam or halo and "Prairie" meaning open space or vergeology around it – thus giving us an idea of how open our town looked when we first saw it from out back! The word “Prairie” can also be found written on buildings throughout town such as storefronts etc., so you can see where various grains were ground into flour here over years ago! The name stuck because no one ever wanted to change it back! Since incorporation into Racine Township in 1907, Sun Prairie has experienced rapid growth with an increase in both housing units and businesses over time while remaining tightly knit with her friends within Racine Township and beyond."

Sun Prairie is a town in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Madison–Wisconsin Rapids Micropolitan Statistical Area. Sun Prairie was platted on November 3, 1854 by Republican Party candidate John A. Wise and Democrat James Fisk as a farmstead named Sun Prairie Township. In 1872, Sun Prairie became an incorporated village with a board of trustees and two commissioners from each township who would make all decisions for the village. On July 1, 1907, Sun Prairie incorporated as a city under the provisions of the Milwaukee Municipal Act No. 214 amending Chapter 272 of the statutes of Milwaukee County (then called Racine). The first mayor was Vesta Hargrave and vice versa; all other officers were elected at-large in their respective townships or wards. Today's downtown area is one of only a few remaining "original" downtowns in America built before 1950 when suburbs began to take over much of rural Wisconsin land around large cities such as Milwaukee and Madison
On July 24, 1836, the first white child was born in Sun Prairie. The town was founded by Isaac Stevens and his wife Hannah on a tract of land they bought from the Hennepin County government. It became part of Dakota Territory after the United States acquired it in 1854.
