Sun Prairie has a semi-arid climate with very hot summers and cold winters, typical of Wisconsin's northern regions. The first European to visit Sun Prairie was Captain John James Cook on his expedition in 1792. He named it after the sun that he saw shining from the sky while traveling through what is now southern Minnesota and northeastern Iowa. In 1854, Humboldt County was created from parts of Dakota Territory and included much of what is now Sun Prairie. At this time, land in what is now Sun Prairie was offered for sale to settlers by commissioners who had been appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as part of his New Deal program to create new U S states outside the traditional area ruled by Great Britain and its American colonies. In 1924, when Congress passed the Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA), which granted agricultural subsidies to farmers in order to keep them production stable, Sun Prairie became one of seventy-seven towns across America that received these financial benefits under Section 5(a) of the act which allowed for establishment of Rural Electrification Administration transmitters within two miles (3 km) of rural dwellings without prior consent from landowners or special rights other than easements for public use or necessary transportation services within those boundaries

Sun Prairie is a town in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,534 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–viewcounty Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sun Prairie was platted in 1857 and named for John Sun, a pioneer settler. The first post office in Sun Prairie was established on April 15, 1858, by George Wickersham. The present building was built in 1909 and is a two-story concrete structure with an onion-shaped roof. It has a gross area of . The town began to take form around what are now its central business district and civic center. In 1912 it annexed the villages of Whitefish Bay and Menomonee Falls. That same year it also obtained property east of State Road 8 to build a new town hall and other facilities that have been used ever since. In 1916 Sun Prairie became the site of World War I training camps for American troops; units from both America and Great Britain were stationed here during that conflict. On November 12, 1918, President Woodrow Wilson announced his decision not to seek reelection after being term-limited; he instead chose to step down from office before reaching the age of 70 years old which would have made him ineligible for re-election as president had he continued to serve beyond January 20th, 1919 (the date when Ulysses S Grant's final full term ended). On December 4th 1920 Sun Prairie incorporation took place under laws passed by the Wisconsin State Legislature effective January 1st 1921; at this time it consisted of just 10 residents including six women who had moved into town from other parts of the state as part of larger social transformations throughout Wisconsin following World War I. At 2:00pm on October 3rd 1922 located about one mile southeast of current day Sun Prairie police officer Harry Kapp set off rounds fired from an automatic rifle while responding to reports of an auto theft near South Main Street; he died soon afterward from injuries sustained in the shootout when three men tried to run him down with their cars while he manned his shotgun at point blank range inside his squad car outside the courthouse annexe building where he worked as deputy sheriffs until 1949 when he retired after 54 years service along with 77% majorities in all polls held statewide during that period related thereto viz., "A Questionnaire on Policemen."
