Stoughton, Wisconsin is a small town located in the eastern portion of the state of Wisconsin. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. The community is named after James Stoughton, an early settler who arrived in 1836. At that time, the area was part of Fond du Lac County. The first permanent settler in Stoughton was John Richardson in 1838. In 1840, Edwin Gardiner moved to the town and later became its first mayor. A post office called Stoughton was established in 1841, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. The first school building was built on what is now Main Street in 1843. That same year, a gristmill operated by John Cline became one of the earliest mills within Stoughton limits. By 1860, there were six churches and thirty-one schools within the town boundaries; however, by 1870 only two schools remained open while all six churches had been dissolved or closed down. In 1886, local businessman George Wachtel donated land for a new high school which would serve as a center for education for residents of neighboring towns including Marshall and Fond du Lac (northwest side). When it opened its doors on September 15th of that year, Stoughton High School served as one of Wisconsin's first high schools with a complement of 460 students from twenty-six towns within its geographic boundaries It would be through this school that future governor Scott Fitzgerald graduated from HS over his older brother’s objections during their 1965 graduation ceremony when Scott took his place across from then Governor Tommy Thompson instead at Waukesha Memorial Stadiums (now Kohl Center)
