Stoughton, Wisconsin is a small town in the county of Door County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 3,542 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Stoughton was John Bird on August 21, 1836. By 1840 there were twenty-five people living in the community. In 1851, Arent Sorenson arrived and platted the town around his farmstead on Clear Creek. In 1867, parson John Leland established a school for students from rural areas east of Milwaukee called Kielman Schoolhouse which he operated until 1870 when it became part of Greenfield Normal School District #2. In 1875 Abraham Lincoln Elementary School opened as a one-room school with thirty students and six instructors to serve grades 1 through 6th grade along with private academies for high school students up to twelve years old known as “Lincoln Academy” which closed in 1907 but has been standing ever since as an unaltered civic building adjacent to Kielman Schoolhouse west of Center Street (now State Avenue) that still serves as a public education facility today. In 1902 local businessman George Fenton bought land east of center from Stephenson & Matson heirs and began development including creating Waukesha County's first shopping center on 152 acres just south of Center Street/State Avenue with over two hundred stores including Sears Roebuck & Co., J C Penney Company, Gorman's Department Store and many other industry giants such as Ford Motor Company; this would become known as "Fenton Park." Fenton also donated land to create Stoughton High School now used by Oshkosh Area Technical College or simply "Oshkosh". The new school replaced an earlier wooden frame structure erected by Amos Kendall in 1830s which had burned down some time prior due to weather damage although not completely destroyed like much else in town during that period because it wasMobile County owned at that time. The cornerstone for the new brick building was laid on October 12th 1904 by Judge H R Nowakowski who served as Stoughton's first mayor following incorporation into village form January 1st 1905 under charter number 82701 from then Onward Incorporated group led by banker Julius Rosenwald Sr.. With only 2 homes left standing after being moved from their original locations across Center Street between First and Second Avenues (now West Side Highway) during those days demolition began soon afterwards starting out with just a few homes at Third Avenue and State Road before moving onto more extensive neighborhoods near present day Fourth Avenue/Milwaukee Drive thanks largely to donations received from various business people within the village limits including future Mayor Harry Wirth who was instrumental in getting grants for both demolitions programmes back then along with current Village Manager Richard Neumann who continues that legacy today through his office responsible for planning and overseeing all aspects related thereto including zoning compliance matters within the boundaries defined therein). While most residents throughout these early decades lived close enough either directly or neighboring townsfolk did so too via horse drawn wagons travelling between those communities daily or even weekly throughout much of this time there were also occasional visits by larger groups traveling via stagecoach service especially during times when steamboats were available both upriver at Stevens Point Landing upstream past Mud Lake Bridge sometimes stopping overnight while delivering goods downstream continuing until about 1915 when railroads arrived bringing convenience rather than having to traverse long distances each day trip taking twice as long plus Sundays offleading most villagers gradually shifted away from agriculture towards manufacturing becoming increasingly isolated geographically from larger settlements within -days journey instead relying increasingly upon trucking services brought about primarily via Interstate 94 corridor running directly through downtown Milwaukee until well into the 20th century notwithstanding some efforts heretofore made locally involving purchasing land adjoining I-94 corridor allowing village residents access however limited resiliency against increased highway traffic volume particularly during rush hour weekday mornings & evenings resulting recently in construction project initiated recently featuring relocation / restoration / rehabilitation several dozens additional housing units located adjacent tho original 5300+residential buildings demolished + relocated nearly 2000+jobs created thereby reversing previous trendils
