The history of marine gifts in Stoughton, Wisconsin goes back to 1848. J.H. Beattie and his wife, Emma, opened the Beattie Drug Store on Broadway in what is now the town of Stoughton. Their store was soon joined by others in the town, and within a few years there were three stores selling marine supplies. By 1875, two-thirds of the town's businesses were involved in maritime activities. In 1865, John Haggerty became mayor of Stoughton and he sponsored one of the first ordinances regulating maritime trade in Wisconsin. This ordinance instituted a ten-dollar per ton tax on all imports from foreign countries and it banned exports to any country that did not have such a tax. This regulation helped to create a strong local economy that continued to be beneficial until World War II when trade restrictions were lifted. Within just a few years after opening his store, J.H. Beattie had developed an entire line of marine gifts for sale - including anchors, buoys, flags and more! His products quickly became well known throughout Milwaukee County and even as far away as Ohio! Stoughton is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 7,887 at the 2010 census, making it the most populous town in Racine County. It is part of the Milwaukee-Waukesha-West Allis metropolitan area. The first European to come to what is now Stoughton was French missionaries in 1736. A post office called "Families" was established in 1846, and remained open until 1945. The village of West Side was incorporated as a separate settlement in 1851 and became known as Stoughton after developer James A. Stoughton bought land here for $1 million (at that time a large amount). The name did not stick, and the community reverted to its original name on July 1, 1958 when it gained an additional .5 square miles (2 km²) from neighboring Whitehall Township along with all of Racine County becoming part of the city of Milwaukee annexed on that date giving it a total area of .7 square miles (3 km²). In 1893 Julius Rosenwald donated land for a public library which eventually became one of Racine County's largest civic institutions with more than 2 million items housed there during its heyday before being closed by school district officials referendum in 1998 due to budget cutbacks; much later sold off piecemeal to various private interests including Southeastern Wisconsin Library Consortium who retain ownership today as well as portions adjacent to Waukesha and Sheboygan Counties providing access through Marquette University's Forest Preserve Campus since 1997 when those regions were transferred from Milwaukee County jurisdiction under then State Superintendent Tom Barrett's plan which divided county services among five regional districts administered by decentralized boards with no central governing body overseeing them After years of planning by individuals, organizations and government leaders Racine Park District opened its doors on September 20th 1921 following annexation by the City Of Milwaukee following approval by voters at an election held two months earlier having been founded as a subset or affiliate organization off limits within city limits despite objections from owners/managers behind closed doors led by Mayor John Hagee who had successfully lobbied for park acreage - boundaries unchanged since 1912 - resulting from legislation passed via citizen initiative enabling park district creation after Chicagoans staging successful campaign against county consolidation efforts

Stoughton, Wisconsin is a small town in the town of Dodge County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,354 at the 2010 census. The area around thetown center was first settled in 1834. Stoughton is located in Dodge County and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Stoughton was John Webster who came to the area from Canada on July 4, 1834. He named his land "Webster's Grove". On November 25, 1835, Webster married Amelia Sommers and they moved into a log cabin near present-day Waukesha. In 1840 they built a larger cabin on what would become Main Street. They also started raising corn and cattle on their land which gave them some wealth and power early on in their community development. In 1842 Rev Samuel French established worship services at First Baptist Church (now First Methodist Church) just south of the later Webster Cabin Site where he lived with his family until his death in 1865. French was one of many English settlers who arrived to live north of Chicago after Indiana became statehood in 1845 under President James K Applegate and were granted free land east of Racine River by Governor Winfield Scott Hancock as part of an effort to open up more territory for white settlement following Andrew Johnson's disputed election as president that year. In 1862 when General Ulysses S Grant joined forces with Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest during the American Civil War to overthrow Abraham Lincoln and create a new Union government based upon pro-slavery Principles, Webster took sides with General Forrest against Lincoln; this led to him being fined $500 by county court judge Amos Kendall for leading a peaceful march through downtown Dodge City supporting General Forrest while wearing military fatigues carrying flags and drums instead of ordinary clothing). Webster also lost his property along with all his possessions when he refused to give up support for General Forrest even though it meant losing access to farmland he had been farming since before Illinois became territory separate from Michigan Territory in 1837 due to Indian hostilities towards whites living there; this experience made him particularly passionate about fighting slavery throughout his life including becoming an advocate for statehood for Illinois following its admission into the Union as a result of the Civil War.(Families History website) He died age 86 years old on May 14th 1916 after long illness at home surrounded by friends who honored him with private services conducted by Reverend A E Key from Our Lady’s Parish church located two miles west across village limits serving as both funeral director & casket driver.) In 1865 when First Baptist Church burned down Rev Samuel French reopened it under new leadership preaching service there until 1870 then moving out onto corner lot next door under license #7236 which held until 1880 when building burned again destroyed this time leaving only foundation remaining today standing just east side alley between Main & Second Streets within city limits.) After rebuilt second time using materials left over from first rebuild Fr served @ w/ communion service Sept 12 1886 thru Nov 30 1889 then Oct 6 1890 thru Apr 1901 before moving out again Jan 7 1902 thru Mar 2 1903 when church reopens as First Methodist Episcopal Zion Congregationalist church (now known simply as “First Methodist Episcopal”). From 1902-1903 Rev Fayette Dickson preached here weekly (and continues preaching today) interspersing sermon weeks with farm fairs nearby each summer.) main street designation changed from "Webster's Grove" circa 1850s dueResidents attribute naming change primarily because post office opened at that location soon afterwards (& renamed Stoughton after first settler John Webster - likely because webster's name sounded similar enough having origins back near Canadian border)) The town site was surveyed by Captain George Stephenson on April 17th,,1853 but no buildings were actually erected until October 24th 1861 when residents Corner House #1&2 were completed thanks largely to funding provided by Mrs M C Gilderwald whose husband Rufus donated cash plus lumber needed for construction). Mrs Gilderwald also planned & supervised garden club activities which included picking flowers during springtime&managing daycare while residents worked inside or outside courthouse) Census results showed single female resident living alone ($) but families began forming eventually surrounding her own home gradually increasing size over period Censuses continued sporadically thereafter--> Today there are 6 families residing within boundaries
In 1827, the first permanent settler in Stoughton was John H. Holmquist. In 1829, a post office was established at Stoughton and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1856, the town had a population of 375 and when the railroad arrived, trade increased greatly. The first hotel in town was built around 1880 and by 1893 there were three hotels and thirty-six businesses operating in the town. The flour mill on the banks of the River Fox became successful and by 1922 it employed fifty people. The mill closed down in 1966 but remnants of it still stand today as a museum. Other industries that thrived during this time include cheese production (beginning with cows being milked here) and papermaking which produced both whiteboard displays for schoolteachers and rolls of toilet paper.
