Stoughton is a town in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,611 at the 2010 census. The town name is derived from "Stoughton" in the same way as many other towns in Wisconsin. The first settler in what is now Stoughton was Abram Holland who homesteaded along the Missouri River in 1836. He and his family were among the earliest settlers of this area. They were also one of the few families to live on the west side of Milwaukee proper when that city was founded in 1834. In 1851, Abram's son John Prentice bought land east of present-day Stoughton and began to build a sawmill on the Mississippi River. This mill became known as "Prentice's Mill". It continued production until 1907 when it closed due to economic conditions near the end of its life. In 1865, pioneer James Wacker moved his farmstead from Cedarburg to an area now located southeast of Stoughton across Clear Creek from what is today Forest Park Boulevard (now I-94). Wacker named his property "Wacker's Woods". In 1870, he sold his holdings to Jacob Hesseltine for $1,000 cash plus 10 acres (4 hectares) of forest land which he donated for use as a public parkland and future school district boundaries. This land included part of present day Forest Park Boulevard between I-94 and Green Bay Road/Route 14 (present day White Road NE). A post office called “Potter’s Mills” opened on December 7, 1865 under postal governors Abraham Potter and Hiram Niles Potters with mail sent from Cedarburg through Prairie du Chien until October 17th 1888 when it was changed to “Stoughton” by order of Governor Levi Lincoln Grant at Chicago IL under act 114th Congress chaptered 2nd Session entitled “An act authorizing appropriations for erecting a postal station at Prairie du Chien” Thereafter it continued under that name until 1903 when it again reverted back to “Potter’s Mills”

Stoughton, Wisconsin is a small town in the central part of Wisconsin. The population was 1,915 at the 2000 census. Most of the village is on the east side of town, around milepost 30. It's named after James Stoughton, an Englishman who came to America in 1848 and started a flour mill here. The community got its start as a farming center during the early 1800s. By the late 1800s, some people had turned to manufacturing for their livelihoods and by 1901 there were three mills in town - one owned by David Starr Jordan (founder of Paramount Pictures), one by Julius Rosenwald (founder of Sears & Roebuck) and one by John Wadleigh (founder of Wadleigh Paper Company). In 1916 Stoughton became home to what is now known as Central High School which opened in that year. In 1975-76, when school districts merged into Area School District #2, Stoughton also merged into that district. Today it remains part of Area School District #2 but has its own police department and fire department with its own ambulance service. The economy was based largely on agriculture until recently; however, manufacturing has become more significant over time due to advances in technology and American industry generally becoming more competitive worldwide. The village has seen several notable residents over time: James Stoughton himself who started out small but grew rich through his flour milling business; his son John who served two terms as mayor between 1959 and 1961; economist Milton Friedman; football Hall-of-Famer running back Tom Harmon; author/editor Marilynne Robinson
