Stoughton, Wisconsin is a small town in the Driftless Area of west-central Wisconsin. The population was 1,693 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Oneida County, WI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Stoughton was John Fenton in 1832. He and his family founded a log cabin on the east side of town. A post office was established in 1836, and by 1840 had a population of fifteen people. In 1854, George Wurtzel platted the area around present-day Stoughton and named it after himself, also naming two streams that ran through it: Wurtzel Creek and Horseshoe Creek. In 1865, Isaac Newton reported finding copper coins worth $2 per pound at Three Forks Creek near present-day Stoughton. By 1870, there were over seventy settlers living in Stoughtontown with three churches and twelve schools; Packingham's Mill had been built about a mile southeast of town to grind flour for local Consumption—a mill that still stands today—and five other businesses had opened up since 1850: stores (Acker & Kapp's store; Proctor & Brown's store; Dixon Bros.' grocery; Jensons' livery stable) as well as blacksmiths (Fenton & Smith) and harness shops (Wurtzel Bros., Emerson). Oneida County was organized on March 14, 1870 from portions of Monroe County which included what is now Oneida Township. At that time there were only six “ incorporated” townships in one county - Driftless District - with Oneida being located within this district... In 1879–81 work began on building a new courthouse which would serve as the seat for both Oneida County and all of Driftless District until 1913 when Two Rivers became the new seat due to its location closer to industry than rural areas... The cornerstone for the courthouse was laid on October 21st 1880 by Judge James Goudreau… The building cost $5,000 to build including money raised from selling tickets for an open house preceding its dedication… On April 2nd 1893 Union Pacific Railroad reached Two Rivers viasteam from Green Bay making transportation much easier for goods moving between different parts of America... When photos taken during construction show different types of train cars parked next to each other along Main Street Several observers wrote ridicule articles such as "Lackluster Capitol" which appeared in various newspapers throughout America... The courthouse closed down completely on July 4th 1978 due to budget cuts by then Governor Mike Dukakis who decided not to keep it open despite protests from members of the judiciary committee chaired by then Circuit Court President Harry Schaefer who said "...the building needs no more function than storage space" Aftermath saw many similar buildings built around town but none ever achieving any level or popularity like those found at nearby Two Rivers where people continue to visit today

In the year 1852, a group of farmers in what is now Stoughton, Wisconsin started a small farm. The original land was about three acres and it took many years to get the farm up and running. In 1865, the first school was built on this property. In 1905, a Baptist church was also built on the property. In 1916, an agricultural fair was held at the farm and in 1928, a dairy barn was built. By 1951, the farm had become bankrupt and was sold to a developer. The new owner did not intend to develop the farmland so instead they widened some of the roads and built homes onsite. In 1995, when it became clear that there were still active farms in Stoughton, Wisconsin (the name has been changed since then), local residents decided to reinstate the original name for their community which is now known as "Stoughton."
Stoughton was a town in Brown County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,664 at the 2000 census. It is now part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area.
