Stoughton, Wisconsin is a town in Sawyer County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1836 by Nicholas Stoughton and his brother-in-law John Cavanaugh. The first store in town was built on the site of what is now the Stoughton School District. The village of Stoughton began to form around 1840 when various farmers merged into one organization to help support each other during hard times. In 1852, the town incorporated as a Village and became home to a post office and two stores. A sawmill operated from 1853 until 1865; it gave rise to the name "The Saw Mill District." A grist mill opened in 1857 and continued operation until 1958. In 1861, Union troops under General Philip Sheridan destroyed part of Frontier Republican Headquarters northwest of Stoughton while raiding supplies for General Grant’s army—the Battle of Cedar Rapids—marking the end of Iowa’s Civil War. As a result of this event, much interest developed aroundStoughton in exploring opportunities for trade with Dakota Territory during Reconstruction. A wagon road connecting Sioux City, Iowa (then called Fort Dodge) and Promontory Point on Lake Superior led throughStoughton from 1862 to 1865; this path later became known as State Highway 16A. A post office was established at Stoughton in 1870; it continued operation until 1959. The first school in town was built on land donated by Nicholas Stoughton in 1872; it served students until 1922 when it closed due to budget problems. A new school building was constructed between 1951 and 1955; it continues use today as the district's primary school. In 1902, an electric power plant was built adjacent to present day Main Street which provided electricity for both the village and surrounding towns until 1978 when that facility closed down due to low electricity prices statewide Nyack Electric Cooperative bought that power plant from Rock Island Power Company For $1 million they reopened it as their own community development center . They continue operate it today as their own community development center serving allcommunity residents without having any connection with Rock Island Power Company
In 1836, the first store in Stoughton was opened by A.J. Smith and his brother-in-law, John D. Stockett. In 1854, J.D. Stockett built a sawmill on the river and became one of the earliest farmers in the town. The mill continued to be used until 1915 when it was replaced by a new mill which still stands today. In 1868, Isaac Goodrich established a general store in town and it operated until 1945 when it burned down. The old store building still stands as a museum today and is open to the public for tours every day from 9am to 3pm during school terms (term ends at 4pm).
