That year, when Company C was organized and its recruits enlisted in order to fight for the American cause during the Mexican-American War, many residents donated items including firearms and ammunition to help support their comrades on the battlefield. The first European to visit what is now Stoughton was Jean Nicolet in 1636. In 1838, the town's first store opened on Main Street. A post office was established in 1852 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1954. In 1862, John Cavanaugh built a sawmill and gristmill on the north side of the present-day village of Stoughton. These mills were among the earliest to be built in what would become Wisconsin; they remain extant today and are significant cultural icons for the community. The mill complex has been listed as a National Historic Landmark since 1984. According to local legend, when Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860, he stayed at Cavanaugh's mill after he left Springfield, Illinois for his inauguration ceremonies on April 12th that year. Many people believe that this event may have had something to do with why Stoughton developed into such an important agricultural center during this time period – its location close to major manufacturing plants made it an ideal place to experiment with new varieties of crops and process them into flour or other products

Stoughton is a small town in the Wisconsin Department of Administration and was first established in 1836. The community was named for Colonel John Stoughton, who donated land to the town. The population of Stoughton was 993 at the 2000 census. The first settlers arrived in 1836 and started farming the land that today makes up Stoughton. By 1870, there were over 100 people living in the community. In 1903, a post office was established in Stoughton and it remained operational until 1957. In 1917, a school was built on property within present-day Stoughton and served students from kindergarten through eighth grade until 1978 when it closed due to declining enrollment. A new school opened in 1990 on campus of the now defunct Park Rapids schools district which serves students from Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade. Today, there are few permanent residents in Stoughton as most residents commute to jobs located outside of town or leave for other communities closer to cities such as Milwaukee or Madison. However, some businesses continue to operate in town including a grocery store, bank, pharmacy, barbershop/ hair salon and several construction companies that have operated since before Highway 39 became an expressway corridor connecting these larger metropolitan areas
Stoughton was founded in 1848 by Reverend John A. Stoughton and other settlers. The town was named for General George Washington Stoughton, who helped lead the United States during the American Revolution. The first stores were established in the town in 1850, and a post office was opened in 1851. In 1861, Stoughton became a separate township. In 1892, the town became part ofMilwaukee County and remained that way until it was annexed by Milwaukee in 1998.
