Stoughton, Wisconsin is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Douglas County. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the east bank of the Mississippi River, about 20 miles (30 km) east of Milwaukee and 12 miles (19 km) north-northwest of St Paul. The first known permanent settler in what would become Stoughton was Nicholas Sauer in 1837. He built a log cabin on what is now State Street near where he operated a ferry service across the river to points downstream for shipment of goods to Minneapolis and other cities along the Great Lakes region. In 1847, Jens Christensen established his weaver's village northeast of today's Stoughton on land that he had purchased from Fort Snelling trader John Fetterman for $1,000*. In 1850, Danish immigrant Ole Christensen erected a frame sawmill on current day Water Street just south of downtown Stoughton. Ole also operated a store there until 1892 when it burned down* * note: According to some sources this store may have been opened by Ole's brother Jacob who ran it until around 1860 when he sold it to Peter Clausen who moved it west across town to First Avenue and North Third Street before moving back east again in 1907 to open another store which became part of Walgreen Co.* Stoughton quickly grew as an agricultural center due to its rich soil and ample water resources. By 1870, there were six farms with over 1,000 acres (480 ha), twelve tanneries*, one cheese factory*, five grocery stores*, two hotels*, two churches* * note: One source claims that these buildings were replaced by modern structures only after World War II; any changes are undocumented* * see: map below

Stoughton is a town in Green Bay County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. The community of Stoughton was platted in 1867 by James A. Still and named after his father, John Still. It began as a small farming village on the east side of the West Branch of the White River. In 1870, it became a town when the railroad extended through that area. It grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its strategic location on the west bank of the river between Green Bay and Milwaukee counties. The townsite was annexed by Milwaukee in 1907 and by Green Bay in 1908.
Stoughton is located in the town of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. It was founded in 1855 by Captain George H. Stoughton and his wife, Eliza Jane. The town was named for Colonel John Stoughton, who had donated land to the community. The first store in Stoughton opened in 1857. In 1870, a post office was established in the community and remained open until it closed in 1927.
