In 1834, Jens Jensen donated land for a public library which was later renamed tablets to honor him and others who helped make Stevens Point an important town in Milwaukee County. In 1855–56, Isaac Nolde built a large gristmill on current site of City Hall Square (now First Street) which became one of the largest flour mills in America. Nolde also founded Stations Catholic Church (now Christ our Redeemer Parish), Steelworkers' Union Hall (now Ladd Arena), Masonic Lodge No 853 (now Masonic Temple) and many other businesses and organizations during his time as mayor from 1903 until his death in 1923. From 1865 to 1870 Hjalmar Rasmussen ran unsuccessfully for mayor against Albert Wirths with support from local farmers turned factory workers led by George Stephenson IV who called himself "the father of modern railways". After learning about Stephenson's efforts he financially supported Rasmussen's campaigneering efforts until he finally won election with 57% of the vote when Wirths could not meet required qualifications After Rasmussen's victory there began significant construction activities including: installation of streetcars throughout town; building new courthouse; construction of schools; creation of dairy farms; approval for incorporation as a city; annexation byMilwaukee County (later annexed into Milwaukee);and establishment of economic districts within city limits including Third Ward business district, North Side business district, South Side housing development District 2A & 2B

Since 9/11/2001, however, marines have also come under fire from some members of Congress who argue that their deployments abroad are not necessary or excessive given terrorist threats against America homeland soil (Lopez v McCain). This criticism comes as no surprise since much scrutiny has been placed on marines since then for their role in detainee interrogations at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base where detainees have included al-Qaeda suspects and others deemed too dangerous to release without trial or violation of international law (Haley v Obama). As technology advances and new methods are developed for interrogation techniques such as waterboarding and other forms of torture, it will be important for marines to continue developing effective countermeasures should these techniques ever be employed on American citizens (Moses v Holder).
