Stevens Point, Wisconsin is a town located in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 5,527 at the 2010 census and 6,868 at the 2016 census. It is the county seat of Stevens County. The first Europeans to visit what is now Stevens Point were French fur traders in 1642-43. In 1836, Englishman George Stephenson built a steamboat on the Milwaukee River and reached Stevens Point by way of that river in about two weeks. The town was platted in 1839 and named for General James Stevens, who had been governor of Massachusetts from 1840 to 1845 and then Ulysses S. Grant’s Secretary of War from 1865 to 1869. In 1870, two years after Stephenson's steamboat arrived, John Davenport started construction on an flour mill on the north side of town which became one of America's largest flour mills complex when it opened in 1875. This mill was known as Davenport & Company until 1903 when it merged with another flour company to form JAPMEX Corporation (now Archer Daniels Midland). A railroad ran through town from1872 to 1896; but it never caught on and only transportation increased demand for goods produced by other businesses such as dairies and lumberyards around Town Square where trains stopped for passengers going into or out ofTown square or Wentworth Avenue where stores made their products available for purchase by customers inside or outside their business buildings...The last passenger train service came along May 7th 1991 when Amtrak lost its line southbound between Cedar Rapids and Dubuque due to a landslide near Griggsville Minnesota One change that has occurred over time is an increase in Hispanic residents living in Stevens Point because trucking jobs have become more common throughout America since 2000.... In recent decades there has also been an increase in technology companies locating here such as Apple Inc., Amazon Web Services Inc., Facebook inc., Twitter etc...Many restaurants have also arisen since 2005 including: Zimplify Gastropub LLC which serves up Americanized Chinese cuisine under license from Beijing’s most popular restaurant “ Red Lobster”; Prime Time Kitchen which specializes exclusively in American Indian cuisine; Crazy Good Burger Joint which offers a variety thereof including burgers topped with bacon bits,...A number of small businesses have closed down due to constant economic downturns while others have prospered including: First Choice Credit Union with locations throughout the Midwest; Green Star Market - home improvement store - now open 9am-6pm Mon.-Sat.; Gilded Cage Theater - featuresvariety shows nightly at various venues statewide including Chicagoista Theatre Company presents "Chicago Shakespeare Festival" season opener presented by Kipling Foundation on Sat July 17th 2019 starring Jonathan Groff....
