The Coast Guard has been in Stevens Point, Wisconsin since 1855. The first station was built on the current site of the Portage Park Mall in 1876. In 1916, the United States Coast Guard District Two was organized and began providing coast guard services to Stevens Point. In 1951, Congress created the Coast Guard Service District Three which included Stevens Point and extended from Superior, Wisconsin to Racine,WI. This made Stevens Point an integral part of the national coast guard system. The current Dahlgren Pier was dedicated in 1953 as part of this district’s efforts to improve access to important coastal areas for both vessels and personnel. Today, there are over 1,500 Coast Guard stations across the United States providing law enforcement and maritime support along America’s coasts. Stevens Point is a city in Wisconsin. The population was 49,813 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Stevens County. The city forms the core of the Stevens Point–Allyn Micropolitan Statistical Area, which had a population of 101,971 as of July 1, 2016. The area that now makes up Stevens Point was first settled by German colonists in 1846. The town was named after General James W. Stevens, an American general who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as US Minister to Russia. The town began to grow rapidly during World War II when the military built a munitions plant here and other industries followed thereafter. One reason for its growth was its location on the Fox River between Milwaukee and Chicago; this made it easy for products from these cities to reach Stevens Point customers statewide. Today, most of what once made up Stevens Point has been replaced by high-density housing developments and small businesses – although some older buildings still stand testimony to early settlers’ efforts at creating an agricultural community around a portage crossing the Fox River
The Coast Guard has been providing security and support to the people of the United States since 1917. The Coast Guard has a rich history that includes gift giving. In 1916, the Coast Guard began issuing gift Certificates to members as a way to show their appreciation for service. In 1935, the Coast Guardsmen established their own charity, The American Red Cross, which gave out free food and clothing to those in need. In 1961, the Coast Guardsmen established the first coast guard base in Alaska. This event marked an important change for the Coast Guard as it became its own entity within the Department of Defense. From then on, gifts from members of the Coast Guard were accepted by both agencies as part of overall military-related gifts. Gifts have also been given in memory of individuals or groups who have served in our branch such as Purse seaman Harry Tindal who died in 1997 after serving 46 years with us. Some examples include medals and badges that commemorate bravery or achievements while on duty; a knife or other tool related to maritime law enforcement; stationery items such as pens, pencils and paper; radios and antennas; vehicles related to patrol activity such as boats, helicopters and planes; or items unique to our branch like historic uniforms or tools used during WW II
