South Milwaukee is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, population 3,083 at the 2010 census. The name comes from its location on the Mississippi River, about 12 miles (19 km) upstream from South Bend, Indiana. The first settler in what is now South Milwaukee was Nicholas Doherty in 1836. The community was platted in 1847 and named for John Sulton, a United States congressman from New York who had come to visit his father-in-law on a farm near present-day Bridgeport and founded that town. A post office called South Milwaukee was established in 1851, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The community took on its current name when it became part of the new city of South Bend after that city's incorporation. The population of South Bend increased rapidly following that incorporation; by 1910, it had reached 40% of the village's total population. However, as soon as South Bend began to experience financial difficulties during World War I due to federal military recruitment quotas, businesses closed their doors and residents fled; by 1920, only 4% of the original 524 people living there were still living there when annexation into the new city occurred. In 1940–41 local officials successfully petitioned for statehood; within 2 years they had extended voting rights to all citizens over 25 years old and constructed a library which opened its doors to the public on October 1st 1941 In response to changes brought about by suburbanization and an influx of Italians during World War II – many people chose not to move because they felt their homes would be preserved – most residents voted against annexing into the city again due to fears their properties would be taken away if they did so again . Consequently , rather than lose all their property they simply sold off some plots but kept most of theirs retaining voting rights until 2003 when annexed back into South Bend proper with full benefits

South Milwaukee, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 5,782 at the 2010 census. South Milwaukee is located in the northern part of the state on the Fox River and between Milwaukee and Waukesha counties.
The first people to live in what is now South Milwaukee were the Menominee Tribe. In 1836, Samuel Whitcomb donated land to build a city on it which he called "Whitcomb City." The city never came to be because of financial difficulties caused by bad investments by its founders.
In 1851, John Cushman donated 4,000 acres (1 km²) of land to create an agricultural community that would become known as "Cushing." The town had its first school in 1853 and was incorporated as a village on December 15th, 1861 under the name of "Milwaukee."
In 1865, during the American Civil War, General George Meade ordered all Union forces south of Chicago march into Indiana so that they could supply General Sherman's army fighting against Confederate forces north of Chicago. As part of this order, General Meade ordered General David Dixon to move west from Fort Madison towards Indianapolis so that Dixon could lead an attack on Fort Dearborn without being affected by Confederate artillery fire which could have destroyed his force if successful. Dixon decided not to attempt this attack and instead march his troops through Cushing into southern Indiana where they were stopped by Confederate lines near Logansport before continuing onwards towards Indianapolis. This event isknown asthe Battle Of Cushing or The Illinois Campaign.
The village lost much potential due to this decision because it would have been easier for them to simply march back home than go through all this trouble trying to cross over into Indiana with no results while also sustaining casualties. Aftermaths included high taxes and little development until 1968 when David Dixon donated more land making South Milwaukee once again an agricultural community with a high school and grocery store."David Dixon History: A timeline"
At present day there are only two buildings remaining from original Cushing- one dating backto 1865 and called Old Main Hospital;
and another built in 1951 named dairy barn #2.
During Prohibition: (1920-1933) & ( prohibition stats ) " alcohol sales went up 425% across all industries while demand dropped 16%. Prices went up 400%, while jobs increased just 12%. Poverty also rose sharply due largely to rural areas losing access to manufacturing jobs."
