National Guard gifts have been a part of the Sioux Falls, South Milwaukee, Wisconsin community for over sixty years. National Guardsmen and their families often visit our small town to participated in local events and receive patriotic presents. Gifts can be anything from cookies to a rifle. The first national guard unit to arrive in South Milwaukee was battalion D of the 9th Infantry Regiment on September 20, 1898. The units arrived just in time for World War I and were quickly deployed throughout Europe. Battalion D emblematic of this history because they were one of only two American battalions ever sent into combat as part of World War I (the other being Company E from Omaha Beach). After returning home, battalion D earned distinction by playing an important role in the 1919 Chicago Haymarket Riot which led to Prohibition being repealed in America. In 1924, there was an increase in war-time donations when Wisconsin’s state militia became known as the State Defense Unit (SDU). This new unit had no connection with either armies or regular service but instead served purely as an unarmed reserve force able to respond rapidly if called upon during wartime by both state legislatures and governors without having to go through Congress or strings attached thereto likeArmy/ Navy reservists did at that time. From its inception until 1944, SDU members made up about one-third of all law enforcement officers serving within Dane County (southwestern Wisconsin) – second only to county sheriffs! It wasn’t until after World War II that gifts began becoming more common among soldiers/neighbors on leave from our country’s wars overseas or during peacetime when local families would send small baskets filled with candy, cigarettes and hats inscribed “From Your Neighbor In Service” – something we still observe today! During my recent trip down memory lane I took notice how many family members still maintain physical contact with their military friends even seventy-five years later by sending them boxed food items such as cheese curds (still available), apple sauce, etc., along with a personal note letting them know how much they mean to their friend(s). It seems that sometimes it takes more than just words to express gratitude!
