South Milwaukee is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the Fox River near Milwaukee. The population was 17,842 at the 2010 census. The name "South Milwaukee" is from the Potawatomi word "mikkewin". The first white settlers in what is now South Milwaukee were Levi Price and his family who arrived around 1836. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Fox River and named it Mikkewin after their Indian village in Michigan. In 1846, John Wirth founded Wirth County, Wisconsin and moved his family to that county. On March 15, 1847, United States Marshal Isaac Hill married Anna Cushman in South Milwaukee courthouse square under ainnon tree which stood until 1961 when it was removed for building expansion at nearby Mosaics Park Museum. After Wisconsin became a U.S. state in July of 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued an executive order creating Racine County as part of new Illinois Territory and ordered all federal troops withdrawn from that territory except for those needed to suppress insurrectionary meetings held by Butler’s Provisional Army outside Chicago connected with General Black’s Confederate army invading Illinois via Lake Michigan.) This move effectively ended any hope of wresting control of this area from either side during the Civil War which played out chiefly on land east of where South Milwaukee sits today including most importantly within what is now Racine County - much like how eastern Indiana became part of Ohio following its war with France). The first permanent European settlement in what is now South Milwaukee was a Jesuit mission founded by Father Jacques Marquette in 1792. The mission, located at the corner of West and State Streets, lasted for less than two years. The settlers were led by Captain John Jacob Astor and his group of seven fur hunters who traveled down the Fox River to find land west of the Mississippi River. They named their new location "South Milwaukee" after their former home city in New York. In 1836, the United States acquired all of present-day Wisconsin from Great Britain through the Treaty of Fort Snelling. At this time, much of present-day South Milwaukee was part of Racine County. In 1846, Racine County was dissolved and its lands became part of Milwaukee County. During that same year, South Milwaukee became an incorporated town with a population of just over 1,000 people. During World War II, South Milwaukee played a vital role as one of the largest military installations in Wisconsin. It housed both American and German troops during the war. After the war ended, many veterans returned to live in South Milwaukee while their homes were rebuilt or replaced. Today, SouthMilwaukee is a thriving community with a rich history that continues to be reflected today in its culture and economy
