The American Revolution started in 1775 in North America. The revolutionary war was fought between the Continental Army and the British Royal Navy. The Americans were fighting for independence from Great Britain, while the British were trying to keep America under control. From 1812 to 1814, there was a military garrison located in this town. It was important because it helped keep South Milwaukee under British rule. The United States Army was founded in 1776 and has been present in South Milwaukee, Wisconsin since the Revolutionary War. The 1st Infantry Regiment was activated at Camp Randall in 1812 and served throughout the American Revolution. The 2nd Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Randall in 1816 and served during the Mexican-American War. The 3rd Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Randall in 1821 and served during the Civil War. The 4th Infantry Regiment was activated at Fort Snelling in 1846 and served during the American Civil War. In 1865, the 5th Infantry Regiment arrived from Illinois to serve as part of General William Tecumseh Sherman’s Union army when he crossed the Ohio River into Kentucky. After Sherman's march through Tennessee and Mississippi, his forces invaded Texas on April 12, 1865, leading to independence for that state. For their service during the war, all of these regiments were awarded medals, an honor now reserved for members of United States military units who have participated in combat operations abroad or who have made extraordinary contributions to their unit or countrymen while serving within it.
South Milwaukee is a city located in the Wisconsin state capital of Madison, on the border of Lake Michigan and Racine County. The population was 85,711 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha metropolitan area. The first permanent settlers in what is now South Milwaukee were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1639. The earliest English residents were French Huguenots who fled from France during the religious testations and wars that followed. They established a small community called La Salle on the east side of town in 1646. The first African American to live in South Milwaukee was John Crain who came to America with his family in 1795. The city was named for Michael J. Ryan, an Irishman who had come overland from Scotland during the 1847 US-Canada War and purchased land at what is now North Third Street and West Capitol Avenue. Ryan donated 1/3 of his land to establish South Milwaukee as a town, which he did so on October 25, 1851 ). He also donated $300 to be used forMayor William Muhlenberg's inaugural fundraiser .) In 1855, Ryan founded the weekly newspaper "Milwaukee Sentinel" which served as its namesake until it merged into "The Wisconsin State Journal" in 1904. In 1865, Ryan constructed a two-story brick house at 224 Wabash Ave., which still stands today (now home to both Diverse Schools Plymouth Middle School and Southtowne Middle School). In 1888, Daniel Burnham designed and built one of downtown's first commercial buildings – State House Building #2 – which still stands today (now home to First Interstate Bancorp). From 1889 through 1893, Burnham served as Mayor of South Milwaukee under City Councilor James Fenton Hillman. During this time period, Burnham developed plans for what would become known as River Woods Park – later renamed Roosevelt Park after President Franklin D Roosevelt – within what are now blocks bounded by North Fourth Street (northwest corner), North Fifth Street (southwest corner), East Second Avenue (east corner), and East Third Street ( southeast corner). Construction began on River Woods Park on April 10th, 1889; it eventually included baseball diamonds (.9 acres) National Historic Landmark #932918; a botanical garden (); an amphitheater (); rifle ranges (); a skating rink (); Playhouse Theater;; numerous other features including Marymount Elementary School; Stonington High School; Eastern Market Place; Heritage Hall; Banning Heights Shopping Center.; Snelling Plaza ;and more! Today much of that park remains undeveloped except for some open space near where Highway 54 crosses Bluff Road! A plaque marking this event reads: "Daniel Burnham designed & built One Of Downtown Chicago’sFirst Commercial Buildings—State House Building 2"—Now Home To First Interstate Bancorp." South Milwaukee, Wisconsin was first settled in 1836 by David and Mary Miller. The town became a city in 1867 and was named after Milwaukee, the city of its original settlement. South Milwaukee is located in the northwest corner of Milwaukee County and is bordered to the east by the towns of Beechview, Brookfield, Waukesha, Maywood, Riviera Park and Wauwatosa. The population of South Milwaukee was 126 at the 2000 census. The history of South Milwaukee began with two families who traveled westward from Michigan in 1836 to start a new life in what would become known as “Milwaukee Township.” David Miller started homesteading on land he purchased from Potawatomi leader Fox Pointe. In 1840, David married Mary Jane Kapp and together they founded the town of South Milwaukee on Black Horse Creek near present-day State Line Road (U.S. Highway 6). The exact date when South Milwaukee became a city is unknown but it likely occurred between 1865 and 1870 due to its incorporation into the City of Milwaukee on November 3rd of that year. One reason for being annexed into the City of Milwaukee may have been because many people living in rural areas felt that wouldn’t be an option if they stayed put because there weren’t enough schools or businesses available close by to offer services to their residents. Furthermore, annexation also allowed for more housing development within city limits as well as better transportation options since it made it easier for people to get around without having to travel far outside their neighborhoods or villages
In 1846, the first German settlers were brought over to what is now South Milwaukee by John Fries and his wife Anna. The community was named after a small creek that ran through the area. In 1853, another group of Germans arrived in South Milwaukee and founded the town of Hamburg. This settlement lasted until 1861 when it merged with South Milwaukee to form one town.
