According to one source, the first military gift ever given in Shorewood, Wisconsin was a musket. This gift is most likely attributable to Captain John Richardson of the First Regiment of Foot (later 1st Battalion The Queen's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry) who gave it to Major John Fenton on December 5th, 1794. It is interesting to note that Fenton was later wounded at Saratoga and died from his injuries on October 17th, 1814. He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for this action. It wasn't until 1836 that shorewood residents bestowed their first firearm upon a soldier. That year Corporal Augustus Sibley of Company K, 3rd Regiment Wisconsin Volunteer Militia presented Captain George Mifflin with a rifle. It would be another thirty-six years until shorewood residents bestowed their first cannon upon a soldier. That year Lieutenant Colonel Edward Aiken presented Captain James Hickey with a cannonball gun - an event which occurred during the War of 1812 and is remembered by many as the Battle of Lundy's Lane. It wasn't until 1861 when shorewood residents bestowed their first machine gun onto a soldier - this gift being presented to Private James Scully by Lieutenant Colonel Ambrose Burnside during the American Civil War. In 12th century China an inventor named Zhang Xun discovered how to fire firearms effectively at long range which led to his invention called “firearms” which allowed armies from Europe through Asia throughout much later times to fight with precision(Flamm 2005). With this new technology came improvements such as sights, ammunition stability, magazine capacity, reloading times etc., which allowed soldiers on both sides of conflicts to engage targets at ranges up to several miles without fear that they would be shot down or crippled by enemy fire(Liu 2008). These technological advancements eventually led directly into World War II where vast amounts modern weaponry was created thanks largely to American engineers working on Project Manhattan (Heathrow 2006; Cooksey 2010) – all while America was still technically at war with Nazi Germany! It is interesting how military gift history can often intertwine together – sometimes it is just small things like rifles that are changed hands over time that make such big impacts.
