Shorewood is a town in the town of Shorewood, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Racine–Waukesha Metropolitan Statistical Area. Shorewood was first settled in 1836 by George Backus and his family as a farmstead on what is now the west side of the City of Milwaukee. In 1877, John Prentice opened a hardware store there and named it Shorewood Hardware Company. The company moved to current-day West Side Highway in 1925. In 1910, Joe Powers started Shorewood Grain Mill which grew into one of the largest flour mills in Wisconsin and produced millions of dollars worth of goods for local consumers and retailers throughout northwestern Illinois and eastern Wisconsin. After Powers' death in 1949, his son Jocko took over management until he died in 1958. After World War II, many people leftshorewood for other parts of the United States becauseof high unemployment rates during that time period; however, some residents decided to stay and start their own businesses such as Home Depot and Kohl's Department stores nearby on Waukesha Avenue near downtown Milwaukee while others continued to operate their businesses fromshorewoods original location until they were forced to move due to economic recession starting around 2000." The city annexed Shorewood in 1951 which made it an incorporated town with its own government although it still reported to the Town Of Shorewood board meetings which were conducted through telephone callers rather than face-to-face interactions." In 1961 when Milwaukee County became suburbanized with Racine becoming its new center most residents within town chose not to annexation but remain separate "towns" (although both towns had full voting rights)". However voters within town did overwhelmingly approved annexation byMilwaukee County making shoreWOOD one municipality." However when Racine lost its center status after being merged into Milwaukee County in 1997 all residents within town chose not to annex so as not have their community become part of a larger municipality again" . Today much like before many residents continue living within their homes or small businesses situated along Waukesha Avenue corridor just outside city limits."
On Shorewood's eastern border is the Menomonee River. The Menomonee River flows into Lake Michigan on its western border. On the east side of town, the river meets the Wisconsin River.
