The Shorewood Air National Guard Base is home to the United States Coast Guard's 7th District, which includes the 5th Naval District. The Coast Guard Station Shorewood was officially dedicated on May 4, 1946. The station was originally located on Chicago's North Side in what is now the Community of Westchester. It moved to its present site in 1951 and became one of the first units of the Coast Guard Reserve. In 1969, the station became an active duty military installation when it was transferred from the Army to the Department of Defense. In 1992, it became part of Joint Forces Commander Wisconsin and has been a tenant station of USNORAD since 1995.

Shorewood was founded in 1854 and named for Colonel John Shore. The first post office opened in 1857. Shorewood was a small town in the Wisconsin area of Fox Valley, until it merged with Racine and became the city of Milwaukee in 1924. The town's history began before that time, when three brothers, John, Nicholas and Samuel Shorewood founded a farm near what is now the junction of Illinois and Waupaca counties in 1847. In 1854, they sold their farm to Isaac Nottage and his family. The town started as a tiny community on the shore of Lake Michigan. It grew quickly due to its location - close to two major railroads, both serving the Midwest region. In 1865, the townsite was selected as the site for a new county courthouse. That same year, it also became home to one of Milwaukee's first schools - a schoolhouse built by Nicholas Shorewood himself. In 1893, Shorewood incorporated as a city under state law. The incorporation came about because voters wanted more control over their municipal affairs from Racine - which had become an increasingly powerful city after becoming one of Milwaukee's largest suburbs following annexation by that city in 1903. At first glance, Shorewood may have seemed like an unremarkable community compared to some of Milwaukee's other burgeoning cities; but its humble beginnings make it one of its most notable features today. Today, Shorewood is home to many noteworthy residents including Mayor Tom Barrett and City Administrator Kathy Stratton-Sheffield; both are natives of the town who have represented it at various levels since 2004 when they were elected into office while also holding down other jobs within their respective municipalities
