Sheboygan, Wisconsin is a city in Wisconsin, United States. The population was 705 at the 2010 census. Sheboygan is the capital of the Sheboygan County and is part of the Milwaukee-Waukesha metropolitan area. The city was founded on July 15, 1871, by General John J. Pershing and his troops during the American Civil War as Fort Atkinson. It was named for Genghis Khan's grandson Sheykh Abul-Mulk Sheykh Ali Baba (Shaykh al-Bab). The first post office in Sheboygan opened in 1872. The present building was designed by architects Edward Litchfield and George Ritchie and built between 1908 and 1912. In 1909, it became the first municipality in Wisconsin to make use of an air conditioning system when it installed fans in all public areas including its schools. In 1927, Mayor Aube Grosse donated land to the city for a municipal park that would be known as Grosse Park after her husband Mayor Fred Aube Grosse (1887–1963). That same year saw also the opening of what is now known as City Hall which replaced an earlier structure that had been destroyed by a fire in 1926. Today's City Hall building dates back to 1929; it has been renovated several times since then. On November 13, 1907 Agnes Whitehead became Manitowoc’s first female mayor when she took office following victory over incumbent Lewis Hickey with nearly 60 percent of the vote – more than any other woman ever running for office in Manitowoc County at that time! Wisconsin Senator Robert La Follette (D) made an unsuccessful attempt to run for Congress from Herkimer County but did campaign extensively throughout northwestern Wisconsin during this election season; he eventually won re-election to his seat in November 1907 despite spending little time outside of Manitowoc County due chiefly to his preoccupation with national politics at that point! Sheboygan's history stretches back to 1836 when it was part of the Portage District of Michigan Territory. The city was founded by lumberjacks from Norway who were coming west to trade goods with the American settlers. In 1865, Sheboygan was chartered as an incorporated town and named after Henry Sheboygan who had come to America in 1827 as a fur trader with his brother John Sheboygan. In 1901, she became a city after being annexed by Milwaukee County. The citizens voted on October 14th, 1901 to change the name from "Sheboygan" to "Wisconsin City". On December 17th 1913, during World War I, she placed her first commercial mill on stream into operation and became one of the largest textile mills in Midwest America - employing over 200 workers at its peak production capacity alone! After World War II ended and before Sears & Roebuck moved their manufacturing operations out-of-town for good in 1957 (following the end of steel production quotas), Sheboygan's economy continued to grow thanks in part to their many retail customers that used its open-air shopping centers located all around town! Today still home to some of those original retail tenants (like Jiffy Lube) as well as major new businesses like Walmart and KFC/Domino’s Pizza – SheboyGAN is an exciting community full of opportunity that continues expanding rapidly each day!
The first European settlers in Sheboygan, Wisconsin arrived in 1838. The town was platted in 1839 and named for John Sheboygan, a local man. Sheboygan became a town of the United States after it was admitted to the Union as a free state on December 6, 1847.
