Sheboygan, Wisconsin is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Portage County. The population was 805 at the 2010 census. Sheboygan is located on the Fox River in southeastern Wisconsin, adjacent to by Milwaukee and by Green Bay. The first European settler in what became Sheboygan County was Nicholas Kieffer, who arrived in 1795 and built a cabin near present-day Goodyear. A post office called Sheboygan was established in 1836, and remained in operation until 1959. The city was incorporated as a town on November 3, 1868, from portions of Manitowoc County. The current mayor is Mary Jo Whitefield. The Fox River valley has been inhabited for over 10,000 years by various cultures including the Menominee people, Potawatomi tribeiles, Chippewa tribeiles, Ojibwe tribeiles and Hoquiams natives; all of whom left their physical remains behind as earthworks or stone tombs around which villages grew up around their great chiefs' lodges or cemeteries (Frost 1966: 107). Eventually these villages were absorbed into larger cities such as Racine or Chicago following waves of immigration beginning with the French Fur traders in the early 1800s (Hecht 1992). With its fertile ground and access to navigable waterways federal troops garrisoned Fort Randall during World War II to prevent German forces from infiltrating through upper Michigan into northern Wisconsin (hecton 1984). As part of efforts to keep American soldiers stationed there off balance during wartimeactivities such as manufacturing munitions at nearby Waukesha Arsenal resulted in increased foot traffic throughout downtown area causing extensive damage to buildings along Main Street between Sherman Avenue and First Avenue during 1942-1943 (Luhrmann et al.) In recent decades some restoration work has been done on several historic buildings within downtown including Our Lady's Roman Catholic Church (1892), Masonic Temple No 1 (1889), State Capitol Annex Building(1950) arna addition to existing businesses along Second Avenue since 1997 when it reopened after being closed for many years due to lack of funds ().Since 1990 sheboyganfest has taken place every year at new riverfront park located just east of downtown parkway across from high school
