The River Falls Artillery Museum is a museum in River Falls, Wisconsin that tells the story of the United States Army's 8th Infantry Regiment (River Falls), which served in World War I and II. The regiment was also known as "The FIFTH" due to its affiliation with the Fifth infantry division.
River Falls is a small town in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 593 at the 2010 census. River Falls is located on the Fox River. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now River Falls were French traders and fur-traders in the early 17th century. They named it "Falls". The first permanent settler in what would become River Falls was John Prentice, who arrived in 1763. He built a log cabin on the east bank of the Fox River and called it Prentice's Ferry. The first post office was established at Prentice's Ferry in 1824. In 1836, John Fetterman platted his land around present-day River Falls along with other towns in Ozaukee County. His plat included land for a town school, which opened in 1839. The village of River Falls was incorporated as a town on April 24, 1847. Construction began on the original Town Hall building (now used as a movie theater) on Main Street just north of Center Road in downtownRiver falls during summer of that year and it opened its doors to residents on October 1st." The River Falls area was first inhabited by the Chippewa and Potawatomi tribes. The first European to visit the area was Jean Nicolet, a French explorer who visited the region in 1746. He named the river after his hometown of Saint-Maurice-du-Pont in France. In 1836, John C. Hale surveyed and mapped the Wisconsin Territory and found that River Falls would be a good location for a New York Company mining camp known as Griggsville. However, work on the camp never began due to political barriers between United States and Canada. In 1841, American pioneers David Thompson and William Clark explored the area and discovered gold near present day Silver Lake. This led to an influx of settlers into what is now River Falls Township, with many coming from Ohio and Pennsylvania. The town was founded on August 29, 1845 by James Hargrave with help from local residents Isaac Morse and Ebenezer Porter. The town rapidly developed due to its position along the Missouri River at one of the busiest shipping points on the Upper Mississippi Valley. By 1850,river falls had become one of America’s most important transportation hubs thanks to its role as a major route for goods moving upriver from Prairie du Chien to Chicago
The River Falls area was first settled by the Menominee in the early 1800s. The first white person to live in what is now River Falls was John Fitzpatrick, who arrived on a ship from Boston in 1818. He built a cabin on the falls and named it "Fitzpatrick's Ford". In 1826, Fitzpatrick's son, James Fitzpatrick, built a small cabin further downstream called "Fitzpatrick's Wharf". The Fitzgeralds were the first settlers to trade with the Potawatomi upriver. In 1843, James Fitzpatrick's grandson, Samuel Fitzpatrick, founded the town of River Falls as a village on the falls. On November 1, 1846, River Falls became a city under the name of Milwaukee.
