The falls are a dramatic drop of over 100 feet (30 meters) from the Glacial Lake Superior depression on a beautiful stretch of river. The townsite was founded by German settlers in 1848 after they arrived in what is now Richland County from Iowa. It wasn’t until after World War II that espresso became popularized in mainland Europe as a brew made using whole beans roasted fresh on site rather than canned or processed beans bought elsewhere. River Falls is a small town in the Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,436 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Racine metropolitan area. River Falls was first settled by Germans in 1836 and named for the falls on the Milwaukee River. The community was platted in 1855, and its first store opened in 1861. In 1865, it became a city. The river that flows through River Falls forms its namesake stream. Many of the early settlers were fishermen who would go downriver to fish for catfish and other game. When cars became available on the Waukesha River system, boatmen started bringing passengers and goods upriver to sell at local businesses along the way. In 1848, the town of River Falls was founded by General Philip Sheridan, who named it for the falls that ran down the river. The town grew rapidly and by 1861, it had a population of over 1,000 people. By 1870, River Falls had become an important commercial center due to its location on the lower Wisconsin River. The city prospered until World War I when it was destroyed by fire. After the war, River Falls began to experience a period of growth and development. In 1925, the city reached its peak with a population of around 4,000 people. However, during this time period there were also several incidents which caused tension between the city and its surrounding rural communities.
