The first European to set eyes on the River Falls area was Captain John Fetterman of the USS Constitution in 1814. He charted the river's course between Green Bay and Milwaukee and noted the falls on his map. In 1837, French explorer La Salle named the falls "Rivière des Anges" after an angel he saw in a vision. The name stuck and it has been used ever since to describe this natural wonder. In 1863, when Wisconsin became a state, a group of businessmen from Racine founded what is now called Wisconsin Manufacturing Company which manufactured goods such as rifles, flour, hardware, bicycles and other items for export. The company grew rapidly and by 1886 had become one of the largest companies in Wisconsin. By 1901 it had merged with Armour & Co., one of America's leading manufacturing corporations. Wisconsin Manufacturing Company destroyed most of its output during World War II because wartime production demands were greater than normal demand for products made out of metal. However, some assets such as factories at Racine and Bochum continued to operate until they closed in 1945 due to war-time restrictions on steel production. After the war ended, these factories workers were able to return home and continue their work at their old plants using new technology brought over from civilian industry
