The USAF's River Falls, Wisconsin Air Force Base is home to the 7th Fighter Wing. The wing was activated on 1 October 1947 and redesignated the 9th Fighter Wing on 1 July 1960. The wing was inactivated on 15 December 1991 when it merged with the 4th Fighter Wing at Milwaukee Air National Guard Station. In its early days, the 9th FW had only a handful of aircraft. It bought them all new from Lockheed Aircraft Company and began flying missions out of Elmendorf AFB, Alaska in Boeing P-38 Lightning trainers. In September 1948, squadron headquarters moved to River Falls after being damaged in an air crash near Anchorage, Alaska. On 21 October 1948, the first jet aircraft arrived at River Falls from Elmendorf AFB; they were flown by LtCol Clarence Cramer (USAF) and Capt John Fenton ( RAF). On 1 July 1960, after years of construction and testing, the 9th FW opened its doors to thepublic at a press conference held at Elmendorf AFB. A total of 96 fighters were acquired through this process: 33 Lockheed P-38s (1948), 16 Boeing B-17s (1949), 8 Beechcraft J-3s (1948), 3 Douglas DC-3s (1949), 2 Curtiss JN-4D Wildcatters (1945) and one Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker/Reserve Airlift Squadron which operated as a cadet unit from Wichita KS until assuming active duty status with the USAF on 20 November 1951. As part of its activation ceremonies for that year, General Curtis LeMay presented Lt Col Clarence Cramer with an official memorandum recognizing his heroism during World War II as "the outstanding pilot in combat" for his role as commanding officer of nighthawks escorting bombers over Japan during Operation “Blitz” on 14 August 1945 - just prior to Japan's capitulation! Lt Col Clarence Cramer flew 379 bombing sorties against Japanese targets between 10 June 1945 - 15 August 1945 without loss! He also flew 384 strafing sorties against enemy troop concentrations within Japan between 10 June 1945 – 15 August 1945 becoming one of only two officers in historyTo achieve such results he received two Distinguished Flying CrossesAnd three Air Medals!He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal! It has been said that "without Colonel Cramer there would have been no United States Air Force!" As head of squadron operations he increased training hours per day by 50%. His leadership saw many changes brought about within fighter squadrons throughout Southeast Asia including establishment of Tactical Air Command MACV HQ Philippines where he became Deputy Commander effective 12 May 1965 With headquarters located at Langley AFB VA collection continued here until 18 Feb 1970 when it transferred back under I STRATCOM command At Rhein Main AB Germany where it remained until withdrawn from serviceeffective 31 Dec 1975 .His legacy lives on today as Memberships are currently held by both Macdill AFB FL & Randolph AF TX !!!"

The Wisconsin Air National Guard's River Falls Wing is the largest and most active wing in the state. The Wing has a long history of providing support to military and civil aviation activities in the area, dating back to World War II. In recent years, we have partnered with numerous local organizations to help promote public safety and Aeronautics education in our community.
River Falls, Wisconsin is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 1,827 at the 2000 census and 1,904 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis metropolitan area. The town was founded as a post office in 1848 by Amos Kendall and others within what is now River Falls Township. The name derive from Dutch "Rivier van Fonteinen", meaning "river of springs." In 1853, settlers named their first home "Prairie Grove". Prairie Grove was replaced by River Falls in 1868 after a stream in that location became known as the River Falls Creek. In 1870, local farmers formed the first grain elevator on the present-day site of downtown River Falls for shipping wheat to points northward. That same year saw construction of first public schools in River Falls when they opened at First and Third Streets under school superintendent James Hickey. A second high school opened east of downtown in 1949 (now known as University High School). The once small town has since seen much growth with many new businesses opening up along its streets over the years; some still standing today such as Hudson's Bakery & Cafe, Jamba Juice and Tom Thumb's Pizza - all located on Main Street between First and Third Streets Historic District (the oldest continuously functioning business district in Milwaukee).
