Richfield is a town in southern Wisconsin, United States. The population was 8,812 at the 2010 census. It lies on the border of Green Bay and Milwaukee counties. The Town of Richfield was organized in 1836. The first settler in what is now Richfield was Captain John Prentice, who arrived with his family from Norwich, England in 1834. In 1855, the town had a population of 350 and two stores. By 1870, the population had grown to 1,500 and three businesses. In 1925, Richfield became an incorporated town with a school district and a post office as its main functions. In 1970 it lost its school district status but kept its identity as a town until 1994 when it regained it as an unincorporated community with its own post office and school District No 6 The townsite that makes up today's Richfield was originally surveyed by George Hennepin in 1835 for Captain John Prentice’s fur trading company which then named itself the “Prentice-Hennepin Company” After purchasing land from the Winnebago people for $5 per acre (the richestowment ever given to any American Indian), they laid out their new settlement including present day Richards on October 5th 1840 by order of Governor David Douglas after some 30 meetings between him and local leaders about location for Fort Atkinson on Menomonee River near modern day Milwaukee Ida Bogan married her husband Lewis Aiken while living at Richards during early years of their marriage before moving to Sheboygan County where he operated a mill there In 1860 Ida Bogan moved back East to live with her parents again when she met her future husband Lewis Aiken here Lewis Aiken operated another gristmill south of current day Richards on menomonee river until his death aged 84 years old in 1904 . Upon his death Ida took over operation from daughter Lula who ran it until 1957 Lula later opened her own store next door to Fidelity Foods located east side Richards street across from library before finally selling out in 1977 . Richfield is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the Fox River near Green Bay. The population was 9,813 as of 2010. Richfield is the largest town in Dane County and one of the fastest-growing areas in Wisconsin. The town was platted on November 3, 1847 by John Prentice and James Fenton from what is now Milwaukee County, Minnesota. They named it for Captain William Richardson who had been killed in action at Ft Michilimackinac while serving with the United States Army in 1775. At first, only men were able to build homes; later women also started buying land and developing their own businesses. By 1851, there were over 100 families living in Richfield. In 1857, a group of settlers led by David Merrill bought 12 acres (4 ha) east of present-day Richfield for $600 from Peter Jennings and moved into what is now downtown Richfield. Merrill Developments developed around this site into one of Wisconsin's most successful commercial entities during the early 20th century. In 1916, Merrill sold his interests to fellow millionaire Alpheus Harkness for $5 million – making him one ofWisconsin's richest people at that time – which made him an even larger force within Dutchtowne development west of downtown where he had become interested in starting an advertising agency after seeing its success run by Harriman & Sons on Madison Avenue in New York City
