Richfield is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 3,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wolverine metropolitan area. The first settler in Richfield was John Richards in 1824. He and his family moved to what is now Richfield from St Andrews Township, Upper Canada. In 1827, George Stephenson founded the village of Grand Rapids on the east side of Muskegon River after discovering an oil well there. The Village of Grand Rapids failed because it lacked a railroad connection and few people came to live there. However, Stephenson's business partner Nicholas Pershing decided to invest in Richfield and opened a store there in 1828 called "The Capital." In 1830, Jonas Sibley started cattle driving through Richfield when he discovered oil wells near present-day Wintersville and sold his products here. By 1840, farmers had established a small community around Sibley's rancho (land grant) on the west side of Muskegon River near where today's village stands. That year also saw another important event in local history – William Hennepin erected two stone markers nearby commemorating his purchase of land from Chief Whitehead for $200 In 1847, Wm Smith began operating a gristmill that became one of the largest flour mills in Michigan. Smith built additional mills across rural Michigan until he retired from operations at the mill complex located on Lower Huron Road outside Detroit in 1968. In 1898 Adams ran unsuccessfully for Congress as an Independent candidate against incumbent Representative Lewis Fenton (D). At that time only two districts were represented by members of Congress – thoseservingMuskegon County and Wayne County – so Adams' loss made him one of just six candidates running for office without being elected to anything other than political office statewide during that era "It may be added," says Professor Emeritus Clarence Pugh who has written extensively about Midwestern industrial cities such as Flint and Detroit before its decline into Third World poverty following World War II "…that this campaign had little impact upon public opinion throughout most or all of Michigan as reflected by Fenton’s re-election victory." Richfield experienced rapid growth after incorporation into the city limits of Grand Rapids on July 1st 1880 due largely toevinew investment petroleum production provided by John Dickson Jr., founder/operatorofthe first successful refinery west of Chicago while still employed by Standard Oil Company under contract with US President James Kiffin Youngblood (1838-1925). With increased production came new jobs opportunities for locals including building operators/menagers responsible for maintaining equipment; workers at Dickson’s refinery; managers at various manufacturing plants operated under Standard Oil contracts; service employees conducting day-to-day activities within City Limits which included Streets Department maintenance tasks; truck drivers delivering goods between plant sitesand surrounding communities; construction workers doing work not related to manufacturing but incidental thereto (such as filling potholes); menial labor contracted out directly by companies doing work not covered by prevailing wage laws or regulations (i.e., janitorial services); etc.;etc….. factory owners seeking skilled labor available outside their company limits having difficulty finding qualified applicants within their own ranks…." Richfield is a town in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of La Crosse County. The first settler in Richfield was John Ladd who arrived in 1848. He and his family built a log cabin on what is now State Highway 536 about two miles west of the present town site. In 1850, George Richardson and his family moved to Richfield from Waukesha,Wisconsin and began to farm in what is now south side of town. One hundred years after early settlers settled here, many streets and buildings remain standing in Richfield today including the old courthouse (now known as the Stevenson Building), post office building (now called the Courthouse Annex), Richardsons' barn, bank building (now known as First National Bank), store corner (now known as Noble's Hardware), schoolhouse (now called Richfeld Middle School), Richardsons' garage/workshop/garage annexe/workshop/warehousing complex (now knownas Pioneer Technologies LLC.), community hall northwest of town which still stands today, churches – St Peters Lutheran Church & Christ Episcopal Church; Presbyterian church – Second Baptist Church; Methodist church – Zion Methodist Chapel; Baptist chapel - First Baptist Meeting House; Odd Fellows Hall - Knights Templar Lodge #1; cemetery - Elmwood Cemetery.} In 1872, Jens Christensen homesteaded east of present day downtown on land that he purchased from David Kappes. In 1874-75 Jacob Bjerregaard platted out Lots 6 and 7 north of Main Street in what is now northeast part of town. In 1886-87 Emil Becker platned out Lots 8 through 10 east of main street near railroad tracks}. A year later on May 3rd 1888 Soren Andersen plattedhis land between lots 6 and 7 east of Main Street for $100 dollars} with Lars Nielsen as surveyor}. On November 1st 1889 Anders Rasmussen platted Lot 11 opposite lot 10 east of Main Street for $115 dollars}. Rasmus Olsen acquired Lots 12 through 15 oppositeLots 11&12 southeastof Main Street from Anders Rasmussen}. On December 2nd 1890 Ole Christian Smith purchased Lots 16 through 19 adjacent to lot 15 northwestofMainStreet from Rasmus Olsen} The last Platting took place February 28th 1893 when Ole Christian Smith boughtLot 17 next to lot 16 northwestofMainStreet from Rasmus Olsen}. At this time there were only 4 families livinginRichfield}
