Racine, Wisconsin is a town in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 25,651 at the 2000 census. Racine is the second most populous town in Dane County after Milwaukee. It is located on the Fox River between Green Bay and Waukesha. The Racine metropolitan area has a population of nearly 80,000 people and includes Racine as well as parts of Kenosha and Oshkosh counties. The Fox River valley near Racine has been called "the breadbasket of America." The first Europeans to visit what is now Racine were French fur traders in the early 1800s. In 1818, General Anthony Wayne and his army marched through central Wisconsin while searching for Native Americans who had ambushed his unit several weeks earlier near Green Bay. One account says that General Wayne's troops discovered twenty-eight scalps along the way; this was probably one of the earliest indications that there was an Indians presence in present-day Racine. In 1827, David Riehl founded a gristmill on Whitefish Creek southeast of present-day Racine. In 1835, John Hickey bought land from Riehl and began developing it into a village named Hickeyville after him. By 1840, racinese settlers had built homes on both sides of Whitefish Creek and by 1850 they numbered around 100 people living in Hickeyville proper and about 140 more scattered around rural areas east and west of it. In 1851 Danish immigrant Jens Christensen arrived with his family from Copenhagen to settle among racinese landowners on Whitespine Creek north of present day Racine. Racine, Wisconsin is a town in Racine County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis Metropolitan Statistical Area. Racine was founded in 1834 by farmers who located there after abandoning the city of Milwaukee. The town was named for Captain John Racine and his family. The first white settler in Racine County was Isaac Morse, who arrived in 1835 and claim to have been the first white person to cross the state line into Wisconsin. Morse's son-in-law, Elijah Clarke, also settled down in Racine and started a tannery there around 1840. In 1843 David Hendrickson founded a gristmill in Racine that became one of the largest flour mills on the Great Lakes region. He also built a sawmill and five other small businesses before he died in 1865. Butch Sorenson began operating an ice cream parlor in downtown Racine around 1907 and it became one of the most popular tourist destinations in town until it closed its doors several years later because of high costs associated with running such an operation alone without help from others within town or from outside suppliers (the business had been profitable for over 30 years). In 1935, two local boys named Raymond Kahn and Irving Zucker were driving through Racine when they met Roy Robertshaw—a truck driver who had just completed his mandatory military service—driving his 1946 Ford pickup truck across a bridge over Menomonee River into neighboring Milwaukee that connected those two cities; Kahn immediately recognized Robertshaw as someone he knew from childhood while Zucker did not know him well enough to recognize him at first glance (Robertshaw had served four terms as mayor of Milwaukee). Kahn asked Robertshaw if he wanted to buy some egg whites from him while Zucker offered to buy them back when they got back inside their car; together they drove back home that night with 2 dozen eggs bought for $1 each plus 50 cents worth of gasoline [This story has been changed since its initial publication].] That moment helped define what would become known as "The transaction" which led directly to The Milwaukee Braves baseball franchise being based in downtown Milwaukee during their inaugural season (1941) – something which still happens today as part of MLB's National Softball Association (NSA) – culminating with their then-new stadium opening day on April 7th, 1949 (the original WISCONSIN HALL designed by noted American architect Ivar Auerbach), becoming one of only eight professional sports teams ever located within city limits (the others being NBA’sMilwaukee Bucks/Clippers OTAs played at Bradley Center during regular seasons between 1984-1987).
