The Racine National Guard was organized on November 15, 1903. The first captain of the National Guard unit in Racine was James H. Donoghue. Captain Donoghue served until 1909 when he resigned because of his military duties in World War I. In 1916, Captain John Bohan became the first colonel of the Racine National Guard and he served until 1932 when he resigned because of political reasons. In 1941 Colonel Arthur Fenton became the second colonel and he served until 1945 when he resigned because of World War II service. From 1942 to 1945, members of the Racine National Guard fought in World War II as part of United States forces under General George C Marshall’s command. After World War II ended, many officers from the Racine National Guard were discharged or transferred back into civilian life but a few remained with the Army Reserve for a few years before being called back to active duty in 1951 as part of Operation D-Day which brought about America’s entry into Vietnam. After more than five decades serving our country, the Racine National Guard is now an important component of Wisconsin’s defense system and has played an important role during times ranging from peacetime to wartime

From 1861 to 1865, the regiment served in Kentucky and Tennessee.

Racine is located on the river Raisin near its mouth on the Fox River. The first permanent settler in Racine was John Valentine who arrived in 1839. The name "Racine" originated with Nicholas-Jacques Racine, an artist and member of the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts who lived in Paris from 1798 to 1826 and helped found that institution. In 1876, when Racine became a city, it annexed nearby Case Western Reserve University which had been founded by Franklin D. Roosevelt as Case Institute of Technology in 1911. In 1936, after another annexation by case university students (the last being UW–Milwaukee), Racine became one of only three cities within the newly created Green Bay metropolitan area; the others were Waukesha and Oshkosh. In 1957, Racine lost its status as a village but regained it as an incorporated municipality after passing a referendum asking for it. Racine is known for its Kohlrabi Festival which takes place each year during October - November downtown where growers from all over bring their crops to be displayed at local restaurants and other events throughout town including a parade down Main Street that features locally made products from participating restaurants
