Fenton who served in the United States Navy from 1865-1887. He opened up his store with a small inventory of supplies for the sailors on board the USS Constitution. In 1912, Captain Harry Sorensen started selling new submarines at his shop on First Street in Port Washington. This gave rise to the Submarine Shop name which still stands today as one of the most popular gifts for sailors in town. In 1962, Commodore James Eaves and Mrs. Eaves started selling military surplus items at their store on Second Street in Port Washington. Port Washington is a small town located in the town of Superior, Wisconsin, United States. It was founded by Danish immigrants in 1854 and named for their original homeport, Copenhagen. The town has beenPolitics and government * Port Washington is a city in Racine County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 10,521 at the 2010 census. * In October 2014 it voted to secede from Racine County because of the county's failure to take action on proposed gun control legislation. The first settler in what is now Port Washington was Ole Christensen who arrived in 1854 with his family. He owned two farms there until he sold them to John Daugherty and his brother-in-law Peterson about 1870. At that time buildings were not yet built hereabouts so all pioneer settlers had to build their homes directly out of the earth where they stood today. In 1871 Otto Kapp established a grocery store here which quickly became a mainstay of our community thanks to its great variety of groceries and other items needed by farmers nearby as well as its wide variety of produce available year round from local growers. After serving as an important part of our community for many years Otto Kapp passed away in 1963 and was buried at Our Lady Of Lourdes Cemetery next door (now part of Holy Cross Parish). There are many stories surrounding how Otto’s store helped shape who we are today – some credit him with being such an integral part that when he died no one couldreplenish his death certificate!
Port Washington was founded in 1834 by Captain John Stephenson and his family. The town was named after the port of Albany, New York, where Captain Stephenson had been born. The Stephenson family bought land for the town in 1836 and built a small cabin on a hill overlooking the harbor. In 1840, Captain Stephenson moved his family to Port Washington and started a mill that produced flour, paper, and jerky. In 1846, Captain Stephenson donated the land for what is now Wisconsin's first high school. The community also erected a Methodist church in 1847. In 1850, Captain Stephensons descendants sold their business to Isaac Sibley and moved to Racine. Sibley ran the mill until it burned down in 1865. The town of Port Washington continued to grow until it reached its peak around 1900 when most of the homes were destroyed by fire or flooded during the Great Milwaukee Flood of 1893-1894. The town declined thereafter as people left for better opportunities in larger towns or outside of Wisconsin during the 20th century. Today, only a few buildings remain from when Port Washington was an important commercial center includingCaptain John Stephensons Cabin which is open to visitors every day from 9am-4pm starting June 1st through October 15th
