Port Washington, Wisconsin is a small town in the northwestern corner of Wisconsin. The population was 5,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Racine–Waukesha–West Allis metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1846 by Dutch and German immigrants who were attracted to the fertile soil and good climate in what is now Port Washington. The first courthouse was built in 1847. A post office was opened in 1850 and became a village in 1902. The name of the town derived from its location on both sides of a small stream that empties into Lake Michigan - "port" meaning "mouth" and "Washington" because President George Washington visited this area during his French tour in 1789-90. The downtown core of Port Washington is home to many shops, restaurants, bars, theaters, and other businesses that anchor an active nightlife scene complete with music venues and dance floors throughout the month of July recess each year. Port Washington was first settled by the Menominee in 1836. The town was founded on the east side of Port Washington Lake, about two miles from its current location. In 1860, it became the seat of government for Racine County. In 1871, it became a village and in 1903 a town. The population of Port Washington was estimated at 1,500 in 1910 and 3,000 in 1920. It declined to 350 in 1940 and 100 in 1960. Its total area is about 39 square miles. In 1916, the United States Post Office moved from Racine to Port Washington because of its concentration of mail carriers and other important factors affecting rural postal service. The post office has been closed multiple times due to changes within the community or lack of business opportunities outside ofport washington. However, during most recent years there have been efforts made by local residents to keep the post office open as a local history museum or cultural center with special exhibitions on topics such as port washington's role in Wisconsin's manufacturing industry or its connection with early American settlers like George Washington Cuyler Sr.. The original buildings that now stand on Main Street were built beginning around 1840 as log cabins by fur traders and their families who had gathered around Port Washington Lake for fishing and trading purposes during what is now known as the Wisconsin Gold Rush era (1848-1860). By 1876, these buildings housed a schoolhouse/ jail/ market place/ sawmill/, blacksmith shop/, millinery store/, grocery store/, bake house/ bakery/. The last building standing on Main Street today was built about 1912 when an addition was added for an insurance company which operated out of town then until 1978 when it moved into new facilities across the street from FM 765 (now US 61) which served as Headquarters for many years before being closed down entirely after deregulation following World War II. During much of this time period there were no paved streets either within town limits or anywhere near it so wheeled traffic had to be handled manually until automobiles arrived relatively late starting with pioneer John Ault’s first carillon playing services starting at 3 Pm each day back at his home west bank on Whitefish Creek beginning around 1900 followed later by others including stores like Sears Roebuck & Co,. also Waukesha Mutual Life Insurance Company which opened up shop here as well prior to taking over operations from their predecessors some time around 1910 according to one account however another report claims backstreet access still exists allowing easy access even today for visitors lookingto wander around this sleepy little corner olWisconsin
In 1840, the first permanent residents of Port Washington were John and Eliza Ducharme. They arrived from Canada and built a cabin on the shore of what is now known as Lake Michigan. The Duchars were the first white people to live in the port area. In 1846, a post office was established at Port Washington, and soon after, many businesses were started here.
