Port Washington is a small town in the Milwaukee metropolitan area, about an hour south of Milwaukee on I-94. The population was 3,569 at the 2010 census. The town has a history dating back to 1855. It was originally named Eau Claire and was part of the Racine County seat until it was moved to Port Washington in 1879. The original store and post office were located on the corner of State Road 7 (later US Highway 14) and State Road 8. In 1907, when Wisconsin became a state, Port Washington became part of Racine County. In 1912, the county seat changed from Racine to Port Washington; however, this change did not take effect until 1914 when Racine County merged into Milwaukee County.
