The Coast Guard Auxiliary in Port Washington, Wisconsin was founded on December 9th, 1916. The first Coast Guardman to be hired by the Auxiliary was George Krause. The Port Washington Coast Guard Station was established on December 1, 1854. The station was originally located at the mouth of the Milwaukee River and served as a port of entry for immigrants coming into the United States from Europe. In 1865, the station relocated to its current location on Waukesha Avenue in downtown Port Washington. The Coast Guard Station has been responsible for policing and security along the Wisconsin shoreline since 1903.
Port Washington is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 1,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Racine–West Allis–Stout Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Port Washington were the Menomonee Indians and their allies who built a village on the southern bank of the Eau Claire River in 1779. In 1837, when Fort George was built on land that later became Port Washington, it became one of its six townships. A post office was established at Port Washington in 1838, and remained in operation until 1906. The first store opened in 1840 in what is now the main business district of town. By 1860, there were four stores and seventy-six businesses operating within town limits; however, by 1870 only two stores remained open while all other businesses had closed due to economic downturns or natural disasters such as floods or fires. In 1871, John Buhl developed farmland located east of town on Green Bay Road for market gardening; this early development helped power agricultural growth throughout much of what is now Port Washington over time including today's corn production and dairy farming. The first high school was opened for students from township schools in 1907 which continues to serve students today as well as providing instruction for adult residents along with many other services like librarying and government services through contract with Racine County government entity Racine School District #2
